10 Minute Squat Challenge - Any Brave Enough to Try?

Imagining the devastation that would be caused by a polar bear sized goose gives me the chills haha

I’ve done 135 for a 50 rep set. I have no idea how long it took me though. It was not pleasant.

After that thread died down, I read geese have sharp tongues they can use as weapons, I don’t know if that’s fake news but that makes them 100000 times more frightening.

My favourite part was the goose trying to take down the elephant.

So I’m holding a band that deloads the grand majority of my bodyweight at the bottom? Still sounds painfully monotonous, but potentially entertaining.

you know what’s funny? I did a set of 50 with 135 on bench a week or 2 ago, and it didn’t really bother me. And yet, doing the same thing on squat, even though my squat is obviously much stronger, sounds like hell. Although right now, doing 1 squat with an empty bar is more than I really want to do, so…

Also, this challenge sounds like hell. Like, worse than anything I’ve ever done. The hardest, most taxing set of anything I’ve ever done was squatting 365 for a set of 20. And I got that done in just over a minute. Doing ANYTHING, especially a thing where you never get relief from the load, for 10 minutes, sounds damn near impossible. I agree that 225 would be way too difficult. Even just holding it for 20 minutes would wreck my shoulders. And we can forget about doing this with a front rack position. I sincerely doubt I could hold a front rack position with an empty bar for 10 minutes. If I were to even consider this challenge, at any weight, it would be with an SSB bar.

No matter the weight but this is the most gruesome part. How do you even plan on not suffocating?

Not at all surprising if you think about it. The issue is one of how taxing the movement is for the body overall. In that regard, benching is fairly taxing, but nothing like squatting.

Consider a ‘challenge’ to curl the pink dumbbells for 10 minutes straight. Even though you know the pain in your biceps (and their tendons) would be excruciating, the prospect of the challenge doesn’t give you the uneasy, queasy feeling engendered by the prospect of a 10-min squat challenge. Why? Because no matter how sharp the biceps pain would be, the challenge simply isn’t taxing enough to provoke the primal, fear-for-your-life anxiety that accompanies the thought of squatting for 10 min.

So for this challenge is everyone thinking of:

  1. Doing squats non stop for 10 minutes (no breaks)

  2. Doing squats and taking small breaks but never reracking.

I was thinking how I’d attempt this and this is what I was thinking

Minute 0-2 - 30 reps
Minute 2-4 - 20 reps
Minute 4-6 - 20 reps
Minute 6-8 - 15 reps
Minute 8-10 - 15 reps

When I was thinking of this challenge I was thinking about never reracking, not trying to see how many reps I can get within 10 minutes.

20 reps in over a minute at that weight seems so crazy lol. You must of been flying! I ran out of breath just reading that sentence lol.

hell yes I was. I didn’t want that weight on my back any longer than I had to hold it.

man… I really want to see this at 135 from someone else before I even consider it. I don’t think I can do it. I mean, I know I can’t right now given my knee health. But even healthy, it seems terrible.

My front delts are big enough were if I needed to, I can roll the bar onto them when Im at the top and not worry about it rolling off. Gonna have to chalk the shit outta em tho, gonna get real sweaty.

There is a good reason for that difference. In bench, the bar weight is all you are lifting. In the squat you are lifting the bar + your body weight. If you were a 300 pound bencher and a 400 pounds squatter at 200 pounds BW (about 600 pounds of lifted weight), 135 bar weight (335 total weight) is about 56% of the actual weight you can lift. It would only be 45% of the weight you can lift on bench. you’d be doing a lot more work at a higher real % squatting 135 for 50.

I managed 315 for 20 once. Let’s just say I didn’t get it done in a minute. By a lot.

If you’re conditioned to high rep squats and pain tolerant, you can easily outperform a much stronger squatter in this challenge, which makes it really interesting.
