Work for today:
Squat:
3 x 70kg
1 x 80kg
1 x 90kg
1 x 100kg
1 x 110kg
1 x 120kg
1 x 130kg
6 x 120kg
20 x 90kg

Notes:

  • Had limited time today, hence no presses
  • Absolutely pussied out of the 10 reps. Don’t know if I had all 10 or not, but I absolutely just bailed. Hit the 6 I needed to equal @simo74 latest rep count at that weight and cut it there. (Yes, the shit training stuck in the craw a little. Maybe not enough)

Edited to remove some whining and add video.
Warning: there’s about a minute of fannying around before any actual lifting happens.

Pretty smoothly, to be honest. Felt uncomfortable as fuck, but moved quickly, no grind.

It was there, I just watched the video, which I’ll upload in a second and you can actually see the moment my mind gave in. Plenty more in the tank. Maybe not 4 more, but certainly more.

So 20 days ago you were doubting 120 X 5, you hit it for 6 and you sound confident that you had more (I’m still confident that you’ll smash it for 10 next time).

I shouldn’t complain about a 5 rep PR. Just irritated I let myself down by bailing before I should. Next time will be 125kg in ~3 weeks. I intend to do some mental toughening between now and then.

Nah only kidding, PR and good effort but I know the feeling of knowing that you could have done more but psyched yourself out, it sucks but use it as for the next attempt 125 X 10!

I had to actually check to make sure the video wasn’t paused for the first bit.

Out of curiosity, is it normal for you to pause so long between reps at higher weights? I get why you do it, by my working theory has always been that - as tempting as it is to do it - that it slowly sucks energy out of you. Because technically speaking, it must be doing exactly that.

Not a criticism, just a question.

Yes and no. I pause every rep or two on more difficult squat sets, but not that long. There was definitely some psyching out going on there.

Yeah, I totally get it. I suppose I have sorta trained myself for those kinds of sets to not wait too long, even though it is tempting. No idea if it is better or worse in the long run.

But whatever, 6 at 120 is good shit.

I haven’t really done enough of those sets to do that. Hopefully it’s a practise thing.
