@cstan097 thanks man

Work for today:

Front Squat:
5 x 5 @ 75kg

Press:
5 x 20kg
5 x 40kg
5 x 45kg
3 x 50kg
8 x 50kg
5 x 10 @ 37.5kg

Notes:

  • Knew this was going to be a tough one coming in, feeling like shit still. Did some (kid) weighted press ups and running with the kids yesterday and was feeling really weak for both. Taking a while to flush this thing out. Will repeat this week properly next week as I haven’t given it the focus it needs this week.
  • Have been reading a bit of Tactical Barbell and am looking to start including some more endurance style training.

Front squat are one of those exercises I feel doesn’t get enough love. I only started doing them 15/16 months back. But they have been a game changer for me. And the final nail in my “Ripptoe coffin”.

After this video - I moved him from “useful for some stuff” to “just ignore”.

@carlbm including front squats as a secondary movement seems to make my back squat feel better. I haven’t done it consistently enough to know if it makes it stronger or not yet, but it definitely makes it feel better and that’s good enough for me.

@kdjohn I haven’t come across any Riplestiltskin content in a long time but I had to stop and watch that video to see what I was missing out on. Is he always that non-sensical?

@T3hPwnisher just to clarify, it won’t be full on Tactical Barbell by a long way. I find the “barbell” part of Tactical Barbell a bit too basic and uninteresting to me. I’m quite interested in the cross training aspect, and especially the endurance stuff that I think is totally missing from programs I’m more familiar with. He makes a good case for 45+ minute LISS work that I’d never really considered before and that I’m interested to try out.

It absolutely shames me into keeping it, haha. Makes weighted vest walks far more palatable.

I’m actually looking forward to that bit, oddly. I really enjoy walking, especially if you can find a time when it’s quiet out.

I absolutely enjoy it; just not the opportunity cost associated with the time invested. But the book helped me with that.

Front squats are just “good”. I can see how adding them makes your back squat feel better. And you are right - that is enough.
But I would wager they will help with the back squat.

He’s… ugh. Slight confession: I actually appreciate Mark’s message; if you want to get basically, overall strong, stick with movements that recruit the most muscle mass, whether it’s main lifts or assistance. And I believe that’s actually a nice simple way of going about it that many lifters should adhere too — most of the time.

The problem is that, by and large, you need more than that. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses, and there are so many other lifts or movements that can be used to increase gains. Mark’s just progressively gotten so dogmatic that anything outside his field of vision is believed to be false. I think part of that is taking his mission of teaching beginners, who don’t need 101 different lifts, and thinking it applies to everyone.

The last three training books I’ve read recently — Tactical Barbell, The Hybrid Athlete and Training for the New Alpinism — have all made the case that aerobic training is beneficial for every athlete or trainee of any discipline. It absolutely can boost performance if applied correctly.

Humans have a natural inclination for aerobic/endurance performance; I don’t think it’s a coincidence that one of the markers for longer life is a strong cardiovascular system. I’m tired of lifters saying you don’t need cardio.

Soapboxing over.

I worry, mate.

I think it’s more symptomatic of where my heads at right now, to be honest. Turned 35 a few weeks ago and I’ve been thinking a lot since then. Apart from 2 kids, I haven’t changed or progressed much in the last 5 years, and I’m feeling pretty stagnant. I’m not particularly unhappy with where I am, I just feel like there’s more incould be doing so I’m definitely reshuffling my priorities a bit.
