Patronymics are used in Armenia as well and with the region being a part of the Russian Empire and later the USSR, it’s rare but possible to find people using the russian patronymic ending. For Armenians with ties to modern Russia it’s even more normal. So if he was a part of the Armenian minority in Russia it wouldn’t be uncommon.
