Body fat, excess digested food stored but the body as a survival defense against an energy shortage. The body functions on the principle of survival. It has many built in safety defenses; such as, fight or flight, reflexes, shivering, energy and fluid storage to mention a few.
The storage of body fat is a result of having consumed excess calories. The excess storage of body fat is a result of bad eating habits.
The longer food stays in the bodies digestive system the more fat the body can store. High fiber diets move foods through the body at a faster rate than low fiber diets. This makes it more difficult to store fats.
The body does not respond well to reduction diets. Again the bodies survival traits kick in. When the calorie intake is reduced drastically the bodies metabolism slows to accommodate the reduction.
Once calorie intake is returned to normal the body does not return to it normal metabolism rate for some time. Allowing the weight to come back on twices as fast as it left.
The body is designed to convert calories to energy and does so in a certain order. Simple carbs (sugar, fruit, white starch), complex carbs (whole grains, veggies), proteins (meats), fats (dairy, veggie oils). The body uses the easiest form of energy first, sugar and the hardest last, fat.
The question is, how do we get to the fat if it’s the hardest to get rid of. A discovery at the University of Alberta can help us understand how this can be done. During a study on how cold effects the body some interesting things were discovered.
It was found that the body shivers when it is cold in order to trick the body into thinking it is in an aerobic state. There is an natural inhibitor in the body that prevents the body from burning body fat.
When the body go into an aerobic state the body releases an enzyme that neutralizes the inhibitor and allows body fat to be consumed. There may other ways that the body is trick into thinking it’s gone aerobic. Weight lifting is a real possibility.
The body however needs energy to get to the body fat. This is where carbs come in. They are the safest form of energy for the burning of body fat.
With out carbs the body will turn to the next source of energy, protein. The problem is the protein it burns is the protein you have already turned into lean muscle mass. So it is important to keep carbs in the body when working out. This can prevent to loss of lean muscle mass.
