The truth is throughout history the only time society has progressed, where the poor can rise out of backbreaking mindnumbing labor and poverty, where people feel free to change their lives and pursue happiness because they don’t always have to spend 99% of their time simply surviving, has only happened a few times for a few hundred years in all the thousands of years of recorded history. What happened during thsoe years?
A few things happened, but they all center around the idea of liberty. Being free to pursue scientific curiousity, free to own your own property, free to do what you want with it, free to say what you want and think what you want and believe what you want, free to be as selfish as you want to be. In all of these, people’s freedom to pursue their own interests is what ultimately brought us out of the darkness.
We’ve already tried to run our society your way, where “non practical” goals were judged and found unworthy. But what if we go beyond bodybuilding to all walks of life, what would happen? Almost every significant scientific advance was found by accident, when someone was pursuing something else entirely, or some “obsessed” person was pursing a whim or fancy of his that had no practical value. Yet these are precisely the people that over and over were the ones who changed history for the better.
The most famous example is of Maxwell’s equations, which never have been discovered if society were ordered the way the OP judges others. He discovered how electricity works by accident. It was AFTER his discovery that the potential of electronics was realized, but beforhand it was just a gimmick and a game. But without him, without his obsessive need to pursue his interests that had no practical value, we would not have modern electronics.
So, being open minded, accepting others and encouraging people to be the best at whatever they WANT to be best at, is the only way for society to progress. Every other way is the road to serfdom, back down the path of subsistence without progress.
