Hey, family history holds no interest for me, that’s all. History overall, sure. Again, I could care less that some Irish men stepped off a boat those many years ago, and so started my family line in America. This ancestor was dead long before my father was even born. What his dress, taste in food or music, and station in life were like, are of no interest to me. I’m just American. No hyphens, please and thank you.

Edit: I can’t begin to say how many times someone has bored me to tears with something like “…and, therefore, I’m related to U. Grant!” Yawn.

Good for you. I would expect that personal take from someone who doesn’t plan on accomplishing much in life, however. I am being honest with that.

I can asure you, your expectations are false.

Great. I hope they are. I still hold the opinion that most people who would act like who their ancestors are is an irrelevant fact are those who don’t plan on surpassing their accomplishments or those of many others.

No, we’re individualists. We don’t hang what we may or may not accomplish, on people we’ve never met. Careful with those stereotypes, by the way. I know how much you yourself hate hearing them, after all.
WTF? Individualists? That has to do with political stance and nothing to do with looking at who your grandparents were and learning from that.

Like we touched on earlier…thats a personal choice. Nothing is wrong with that…but you can’t be insensitive and naive as to why others hold those things important to them. This touches on when I stated that most white people don’t celebrate or take pride in their cultural, racial history. It holds no value to the majority. Which asks: why do things hold value in the first place?? Because they’re rare.

I know who my grandparents were. I actually met them a few times.

Ok, is there some confusion here? Am I asking for a law to ban people from tracing their ancestory? Or singing their homeland’s spiritual hymns, or whatever?

Don’t go in left field on me yet. I’m not saying you’re wrong for all of that being unimportant to you. I just don’t get how you don’t see why those things are important to some people. But then again…if you actually understood that…you probably wouldn’t have the stance you have now concerning family history…culture…etc.

No, but you do seem to misunderstand the importance to a group of people simply because those people aren’t you.

If your history was never in question, then chances are you put less importance on familial history.

My guess is, if your house is broken into, you will probably pay much more attention to security than if you had never had an experience like that.

What gets to me and others is WHY this has to be explained to anyone.

Well, if it’s not important enough for me, I’m not going to believe it’s important for anyone else. But, they’re free to do it. I don’t hate or dislike someone because they found out that their great-great-great grandpappy was a whaler, or somesuch thing. It just does nothing for me.

Like I said, the 4th and Thanksgiving is good enough for me. I think of ST. Patrick’s as nothing more than a day of drinking.

I do believe that is the very definition of social/cultural ignorance.

Thanks for playing. You were a great visual aid.

Why is it so essential that I agree that you tracing your great-great-great grandpappy’s history is important? Do it, or don’t. I’m just laying out my opinion.

Well, if I thought it truly was important, I’d be doing it…

From henceworth, I declare my view as a cultural one. So now, let’s not go disrespecting my culture, please.

Ok, ok. After some discussion here I’m trying to track down my earliest ancestor. Anyways, anyone got a name for this guy?

Edit: My understanding is that my family line came out of Africa, as it’s origin. If that helps.

Also, there is a show that comes on PBS called “African-American Lives” were black celebrities have the genealogy of their families researched. You can just see the “pride” in their faces as they find out the history of their families.
I’ve seen two episode of that show. It is awesome.

Well, if I’m going to trace my family history, why stop at Ireland? Or, even Europe at all? My earliest ancestors didn’t originate from there.

Edit: Ok, from the latest science I can locate at the moment, I think I’m Ethiopian.

I didn’t get my invite yet.

Well, my family line ended up reaching the Homo Sapien level and moved out of Africa to Europe. And then in Europe, it appears that one of my Ancestors got it on with a Neandertal. Who might have looked something like this.

Actually, a closeup of Neandertal-Sloth.

He wasted all his clams investing in the square wheel. Well, you all know how that turned out. Anyways, the family has been in debt since then.

Edit: Bah, Neandertal-Sloth pic isn’t showing up. I’ll make him my avatar.
