Rep. Bob Ney (R-Ohio) may well be indicted in connection with the Jack Abramoff case, according to reports citing fellow House Republican Jim McCrery, of Louisiana. The Justice Department already subpoenaed Ney in connection with the Abramoff investigation and linked Ney not only to Abramoff, but Michael Scanlon, Abramoff’s associate, both of whom pleaded guilty this week to several charges.
Ney, who chairs the House Administration Committee, has yet to face any legal action despite the subpoena. However, according to Gannett News Services, Ney is listed as “Representative 1” in court documents, where Abramoff and Scanlon accuse the congressman of accepting travel, campaign contributions and sporting event tickets in exchange for official acts.
Should Ney be indicted, he could be the first member of Congress to fall, but probably not the last. Several lawmakers, Republicans and Democrats, have returned money from Abramoff in an attempt to distance himself or herself from the troubled lobbyist. These lawmakers could very well face subpoenas and punishment in the near future.
