Went to Planet Fitness Today...

I worked out at a Planet Fitness for a while. Maybe this one is different, or maybe you guys blow all this stuff out of proportion. The one I went to played music (shitty, but music nonetheless). There was a lunk alarm, it never went off. There were some bodybuilders and a few powerlifters. They went in, got their work done. They didn’t bother anyone, no one bothered them. In addition to myself there were a few other college football players. Big dudes, again no problem.

Technically there is no deadlifting allowed but the owner allowed people to deadlift as long as we didn’t slam the weight. Yes, the DBs only went up to 75. But the barbells still held as much weight as you could lift. And as for being looked at by the other members, doesn’t that happen in every gym? Are you telling me that if someone was in your gym putting up big numbers on the bench no one would check it out? I don’t agree with some of their written policies. But for 10 bucks a month i gave it a shot and I made some great progress in there. They may have some gay ass signs and shit in there, but it’s a gym. No matter what the signs on the walls say a couple 45 pound plates on a 45 pound bar are the same as they are in any gym. I did my squats, power cleaned, didn’t deadlift because it’s not part of my team’s offseason lifting program. I never saw anyone asked to stop grunting.

It is not a terrible place. It is geared towards 1st time gym members and women. Think about it, if you wanna make money there’s more of these than the kind of people on this forum. Doesn’t mean you can’t still go there and make progress. The whole “judging” thing is really that they don’t want guys sitting there staring at the girls the whole time making them uncomfortable. Again, never saw this enforced. Are there some disgusting fatbodies there? Yes. Music sucks? Yes. DBs only up to 75 lbs? Yes. 10 bucks on a college student’s budget? I’ll make due.
Good post.

No but he has a whole thread promising to set off the alarm cause havok and get kicked out, with the whole event being filmed. No such event has been posted yet.
But that must effect your workout. I mean subconsciously you are holding back.

I couldn’t do it. This is so insane. Why do they have weights if you can’t use them ??
Who is going to use 75lb db’s without making some noise. It’s not natural I tell ya!
I’m sure most of the equipment doesn’t get used. I would probably set off the alarm
and go off on the fat bitches, Damn !

Stupid random thought: wouldn’t “right next to a planet fitness” be an ideal location to open an hardcore gym ?
Yea so they could hear the bass pumping through the walls and plates knocking together.

It would drive them ape shit HAHA !

10$ bucks a month you must be mistaken.
And will this gym last as a company nooooooooo
It will probably be bought up by Gold’s and all will be back to normal.

Alright alright…I talked to HolyMac today and Im going up to T-Town sometime within the next 2 weeks hopefully to be his camera guy. If everything goes as planned we will have your video. Hahahahahhaahah

Sometimes the military calls and there is nothing you can do about it.

Fuck! I wish one of those places open in Toronto. I swear, I don’t care how far it is I’m gonna check in and set the lunk alarm off while doing deadlifts. If anyone knows any Planet Fitness in toronto, tell me where it is and I swear I’m gonna go with a video cam on hand.

Mistaken? I’m pretty sure I know what I paid. That’s why I joined.

May as well call it “testosterone free zone”. I’d love to go in, warm up, and then perform a clean and press, dropping it after lockout. Then maybe pretend to hurt myself when the alarm went off and threaten to sue… I can’t see anyone actually wanting to work out there who wasn’t a total mental case. I’ve had memberships to 7 or 8 gyms as well as completed a dozen free trials, and I’ve never seen anyone give someone they didn’t know a hard time. I’ve seen people ask people who camp out on a machine and don’t use it for their 10 minute rest period to let them work in, or save a newbie from doing something dangerous, but that’s about it. I would guess that gym is full of easily offended old people and a few super self conscious ego jobs who think people actually care or are paying attention to them.

I guess it’s better than no gym, but I couldn’t work out there since explosively breathing out and occasionally grunting is part of the game. If you’re quite, you ain’t workin’ hard enough.

You guys seriously blow this out of proportion, i lift at PF and the only bad thing about it is no sitting calf machine, but i put a request and they are looking into it. The PF gym i go to was built where an old Golds gym used to be, so a lot of big guys and strong mofos lift here. We have DB handles for people who use more then 80db’s AKA almost all the big people, and we are even allowed to drop weights as long as its not a habit or on purpose. The only time i heard the lunk alarm was when this guy was doing bench press and got smashed with 290lb on the bar, they turned it on so everyone would move out the way and let them do their job or w/e.

If you go on non peak hours before 11am and after 9pm , there is some oly lifter that go there that lift twice a day and they are allowed to drop weights and stuff as long as they put some yoga mats on the landing area to cover some of the sound.

Obviously if i was given the chance to go to a hardcore gym i would be out of here in a second, but it is seriously not as bad as you guys make it seem.

To me it sounds like if the PF have big guys regularly lifting there they ease up on the rules.
But not this one, my buddy goes there 5 days a week(I dont see how).
The alarm goes off quiet often when people get too loud or set the weights down wrong, almost like a " dont make me count to 3" thing.

What kind of shitty college do you go to that doesn’t have a free gym for students let alone athletes?

You must go to a d5 school or something.

the testimonials at the end of the video are the best

Youtube is blocked at work… guess I gotta wait until I get home.

If the weight is slamming down on deadlifts (within reason of course), you’re not going heavy enough. Fuck Planet Fitness.

That’s just weird. Off season lifting is almost always done in campus facilities as well. That was even a requirement for HS sports.

I live 4 1/2 hours away from my school. Yeah kids that live close to school lift on-campus. It’s easy to require that for HS sports, as you normally live near your school. We have kids from FL, Cali, PA, Mass., unless you live on campus all year how’s that gonna work?
