Hey DJ… sorry to take this off-topic for a bit, but has there ever been a moment in the ER where something you saw was so awful, you almost passed out?

When I was first in the field about 18 years old I was a respiratory therapist, basically we were always in the deep shit. Death and dismemberment. We also managed people on the ventilator (respirator), most medical protocol states that after a certain number of days you want to do a tracheotomy. Which is taking the breathing tube out of the mouth and put it in the neck.

So here I was 18 years old just licensed and assisting the surgeon cause he did these at bedside, (remember this was 1992). When he took that scalpel and cut the neck, I got weak in the knees. That was the only time really that I almost passed out, you get used to it.

Now the other time was 4 years later, some old guy was drunk standing on the corner of a gas station about 100 feet from the ER. Took out his .35 and shot himself in the head, bullet went in through the temple and came out the front left part of his forehead. When we were doing CPR blood would squirt out of the bullet hole about 2 feet. That was kind of funny, but the bad part was he had been drinking Jack Daniels and eating Doritos. So when they went to intubate him they tubed the stomach instead of the trach and shot vomit all over the floor and him. That is a HORRIBLE smell. That was actually the last Super Bowl that Dallas played in it was SB Sunday.

Later when I got off to go watch the game in honor I had Jack and Doritos at the sports bar we watched the game at.

Sorry for wall of post. I could really do my own thread with Heavythrower of course and all our ER stories.

6 toenails, 5 toes.

Keeping with the OT, when my father was in the army he was driving an ambulance (only two in the entire island) and he saw all kinds of nasty stuff. He was no doctor, just driving the ambulance, but had to help with things. He also had to recover corpses. He “likes” to tell how he had to recover a little kid who had died in a swamp and the bugs had eaten eyes and stuff. He was in shock for a long time.

He is human and a good man if it bother him.

I knew I had to get out when those types of things didnt bother me any more.

I actually have a question to you about this. You see quite nasty things, not just physical, but psychological (stressed families, etc.). Did you “train” to be able to handle all this? Is it a talent?

Just like anything else, you get used to it over time. Though you do have to have somewhat of an ability to atleast handle it in the beginning. At first you are shocked about alot of stuff you see. Then you go to Haiti and have to stack dead babies on shelves in the morgue so they don’t get crushed by the adult bodies because you have way more corpses than room. Sometimes to only way to deal is joking.

Guess so. I don’t think I could ever handle it. Weak stomach.

I think we unconsciously drift towards what we are good at, I was always the guy people open up to even as a teenager. I also think some people deal with it while others do not. The people who can do it long term are the ones that can give just enough of themselves to help people but do not go “all in”. I dont know if that makes sense or not, however my problem has always been when I help somebody I would give all. I have always been an all or nothing guy. That is why I had to get out of the ER and Family Practice, emotionally it was draining me. I was a walking corpse at home and my wife wanted me out of that.

Do I think people can be trained to handle? Yes, will that make them an empathetic person that can do, help and handle all the bad shit. No. I think that is an inherent quality, like how ID can make art or what makes people funny.

Various luminaries over the years (Bryon, Keats, etc) have discovered the altered mind state that can be achieved by repeating a word (usually their own name) many times.

Of course, they often partook of laudanum when experimenting with this. I have not taken laudanum, but when I repeated my own name many times, I found myself in a truly weird place also

A few months ago I was sitting at the computer waiting for it to boot up. I randomely picked out a cd to look at the cover art or whatever. I picked out an Alice in chains cd and as I was checking it out I wondered whatever happened to the original bass player?

Two minutes later I log onto T-Nation and there be a thread, R.I.P. Mike Starr, original bass player for AIC.

Linking this to some of Nards and my posts, I’ve read that thoughts actually have an electrical weight, they physically exist (science of Noetics)and they can actually travel a small distance kind of like esp. Expiriments have been conducted and demonstrated that thoughts can be shared by a large group in close proximity without communication.

I can’t find a link but it was in a book I read called “Infinite Mind: Science of Human Vibrations of Consciousness” by Valerie Hunt.

Expiriments have also been conducted where people have been hooked up to computers via cable and have caused things to happen on screen with the power of thought alone.

I’ve wondered if, given the fact thoughts do carry electrical charge according to scientific findings, it’s possible for a thought to “absorb” in to an electric stream or a wifi connection, radio frequency et cetera and travel, maybe at a faster rate than the original broadcast. Some how the thought shows up to a receptive brain, like a premonition or electric charge finding an outlet. Pretty weird.

Edit: Or maybe the broadcast comes through wireless venues before being encrypted to a recognizable energy and our brain circuitry pick up on it early.

I once logged onto TNation looking to see some tits and ended up a strange forum about all kinds of wierdness.

I totally agree with your first line, that’s why I asked if it was a “talent”. I don’t think everyone’s cut to be a forensic doctor, in example.

I can understand why your wife wanted you to quit. Sometimes I’ve helped people with issues and it left me depressed for the entire evening or even for few days, like, unable to be happy because that person was in that situation…

Sometimes I feel there’s some kind of connection between people and situations that is very hard to explain. Maybe it’s just coincidences or maybe it’s ourselves forcing it.

I will give some examples. I like to learn new things, so wikipedia is one of my favourite websites in the entire worldwide web. The interesting thing is that, for some reason, I end using the recently acquired information the next day. It happens all the time. I really don’t know if I push the conversation so I can show off this new acquired knowledge or what is going on.

During the last months I’ve had some political/historical arguments, that I did NOT start (maybe I did and I didn’t realize) and I could stand my ground thanks to everything I had learned the day before from wikipedia.
Maybe it’s just coincidence…

…and I love coincidences. Wishing for something super specific and getting it always makes me laugh.
