Unfair Vehicle Registration Fee

Clip is like a modern day locke with cogent and insightful philosophizing such as above.

Clip if I held a court in my house and locked people up in my basement or executed them that would be illegal. If I started auctioning off the rights of ownership of certain radio waves, nobody would listen because it woudl have no validity. The gov’t DOES have certain rights that the individual does not have, and while there are arguments that can be made against many taxes - or heck, you could probably come up with an argument against ALL forms of taxation - the old “I want to keep my money” argument is not considered to be tremendously persuasive.

Check out this thread (from a local forum) about lapsed car registrations and potential punishments:

Have a friend who for whatever reason allowed her car registration to lapse something to the effect of 6 months overdue (I’m not defending that, just presenting the fact).

Was pulled over by a State Trooper who was visibly upset about this. He let her know in no uncertain terms that she’s lucky he didn’t have her car towed and her child (age 3) taken into custody by DHHS.

Incredible!

I read a bunch of the posts in that thread - a lot of it was nonsense. There is so much paranoia out there and stories like this just make it worse. Some cops will say ridiculous things just to get a rise out of people. Case in point:

My mother once scratched someone’s car pulling into a parking spot. She left a note on the person’s car with her information. The person contacted their insurance company for advice and they told her to get a police report to make sure my parents paid for the damage. Later that evening, a county cop came over to get my mother’s statement. During the course of the brief interview, the cop said he had every right to haul my mother to the courthouse for fleeing the scene of an accident. At that point, my father kicked him out of our house after offering him some advice about how to do his job.

Well i hate to tell yo but it’s true. My good friend is a Police Officer for Roselle NJ. Their department policy is to tow all cars with expired registration. Fact.

You can always move there and see how you like it. Your oppportunities for property ownership in Europe are much more limited than here in the U.S.

Growing population with a small group of people owning all the land in perpetuity is a recipe for disaster.

Huh? Did you mean to post this in another thread? If not, please clarify this statement.

Turns out it is true. Verified by an attorney friend who deals with these all the time. While the scenario is extreme (ie taking child into custody), it is well within the parameters of the law (that being overdue registration by a large amount is a felony).

I don’t doubt that. I didn’t say anything about the ability to impound the car or even arrest her. Whenever anyone gets arrested with a child in custody, that child is temporarily assigned to child services pending arraignment of the adult or another close family member (father, grandparent, etc) comes to pick up the child. They can’t just leave the child on the side of the road or let him roam the precinct house.

What I was referring to were some of the posts in that thread, such as the one saying that any cop in any town can arrest you for no reason just to get his name in the papers.

On the other hand, I’m sure you present the same way in person.

Why shouldnt I get to keep my money? I go to work or hustle for it! I found my own job without government help! I spend my money to put gas in my car to get to my job! I cant call Lansing and ask them for gas money if it was 10 dollars a gallon. No tax ive ever paid has personally benefited me.

Again, I think you are misinterpreting what is being said here. You made a very Marxist statement and MG was pointing out that this sort of thinking doesn’t go very far. She wasn’t exaclty “dissing” you.
clip11 wrote:

You get to keep your money, however we all (not just you) are required to contribute our share to fund the government.

Hustle? What does that mean? Are you a con artist or a thief?

Good for you! As a contributing member of society you are supposed to support yourself without assistance from the government.

And conversely Lansing can’t ask you for money without the permission of someone whom you have chosen to represent your best interests.

So you don’t drive on roads, enjoy fire, police and military protection, or go to a public school?

Moral of the story: Life sucks sometimes, but we all have responsibilities which includes paying taxes. I you want to lower your tax burden then change your government. Vote for candidates who want to decrease the size of your government and you will get to keep more of your money.
