Pan’s Labrynth is a great movie and I’m usually not that for foreign films
Donnie Darko…still amazed at how many people have not actually seen this movie

When people say to me they liked A Few Good Men, I always say I liked better the first time when it was called Breaker Morant.

I agree that Breaker Morant is the better movie, but I would not say AFGM was based on it. BM is the story of a deliberate attempt by the military hierarchy to cover their tracks, while AFGM is just another court room drama with a comfy resolution at the end.
Equilibrium
Snatch- this is a bodybuilding site and no one’s seen Snatch? think Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels part 2
plus brad pitt’s accent as an Irish gypsy boxer is rad.
Boondock Saints
Baraka-best art film ever, beautiful look at the world, google it

I’ll throw “Secondhand Lions” into the mix. Michael Caine, Robert Duvall, Haley Joel Osment, Kyra Sedjwick. Big name cast, but the studio gave it no backing and it disappeared from theatres almost as soon as it arrived.
There’s a fair bit of touchy-feely stuff thrown in there, but the two old men played by Caine and Duvall are fantastic; by turns hillarious and astounding. It’s like being a kid and hearing tales from the family about the amazing deeds your grandfather did in his younger years. Definitely worth a watch.
I’ll definitely second this… I caught it on TV somewhere or other, and I watched it through to the end. Remember hearing fantastic stories of adventure as a little boy and being totally captivated by them? This movie kind of let me relive that through Osment’s character. I need to rent it to catch the beginning.
life is beautiful - great movie about a father trying to shield his son from the holocaust

In Good Company, with Dennis Quaid playing an aging magazine ad salesman who gets demoted and his new boss is Topher Grace, half his age and using words like “synergy.” The movie has substance and doesn’t follow the typical Hollywood mold.
I actually thought this was one of the worst movies I’d seen in years when I happened to catch it.
There was absolutely no plot or character development at all (save for a small bit with Grace’s character) and the movie just…ended. There was no story arch, no climax, no anything really. It was like just watching two hours of two guy’s fictional lives and their brief interactions with one another and then just walking away.

“Waiting” and “Just Friends” - Ryan Reynolds is a genius. Laughed my ass off.
I’m always amused that you can be such a hard ass in some posts, and then turn around and talk about your man crush on Ryan Reynolds. No offense meant, I really do think it’s hilarious.
“Das Boot”
Story of a German submarine during WWII.
The best submarine movie ever…
Once Were Warriors was absolutely brutal in a good way.
The Last Castle
Swingers (1996), with Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau. A great movie that didn’t do well at the box office but is one of my all time favorites.

Think you are off on your numbers. It did do well at the box office. This is considered one of the best indie success stories. It made over 22 times it’s budget back. It cost $200,000 and made $4,505,922. That doesn’t even count DVD sales. But good call, great movie.

I hear what you’re saying about the storyline, but the way the movie unfolded is one of the aspects that appealed to me about it. Quaid’s character could’ve gotten his just dues at the end but instead he stayed a decent, though never wimpy, guy the whole way through. Heck, he laid out a guy less than half his age with one punch but goes on to take him in like a father. I liked it that he was portrayed as a man of strong character and a family man, and that Grace’s character wasn’t simply demonized as the bad guy.
The movie was nothing earth shattering but it struck a chord with me nonetheless.

I can respect that. In the end, that’s all that really matters anyhow. I’m honestly glad you enjoyed it.
Just thought of another one:
Brotherhood of the Wolf:: This French-made (I think) movie didn’t make any splash at the box office because they didn’t know how to market it. Part horror movie, part martial arts movie set in the early stages of the French Revolution.
A French guy who’s part Scarlet Pimpernel and part Van Helsing travels around solving ‘occult’ mysteries with his Iriquois (sp?) companion, who happens to be a badass martial arts fighter. Beyond that, it defies easy synopsis. Check it out.
I know this thread has already died, but I had to add Memento and Following. They are both directed by christopher nolan and have very interesting narration techniques. Also, one of the best comedies you’ve never heard of is Run Ronnie Run.
I saw an online ad for a new movie from the director of “City of God” but I forget the name. Anyone know it/if its any good?
