Under the Radar Movies

Lucky Number Slevin and Boondock Saints were amazing. Two of my all-time favourites.

I’ll throw “Secondhand Lions” into the mix. Michael Caine, Robert Duvall, Haley Joel Osment, Kyra Sedjwick. Big name cast, but the studio gave it no backing and it disappeared from theatres almost as soon as it arrived.

There’s a fair bit of touchy-feely stuff thrown in there, but the two old men played by Caine and Duvall are fantastic; by turns hillarious and astounding. It’s like being a kid and hearing tales from the family about the amazing deeds your grandfather did in his younger years. Definitely worth a watch.
That was a good one.

I’ll toss in another vote for Secondhand Lions. It seems like a movie that would have been made years ago. Great cast, great acting, one of those movies you just get to sit back and enjoy.

And Robert Duvall whooping ass and then using it to teach the young guys a lesson, very T-manish.

Croupier - UK flick starring Clive Owen. It’s a good gambler movie. In that it’s about the croupier/dealer point of view.

City of God- the rise and fall of two brazilian gangsters as told by a photographer that grew up around them.

Very good film. There were great performances all around. The lead was the writer and did an OK job. Rick Schroder (yeah, Silver Spoons Ricky) was in it along with the Gods Christopher Walken and Chazz Palminteri. Schroder was pretty badass in his small role. He definitely needs to be given more work.
This movie had me hooked from the very beginning as they used the entirety of James Brown’s “The Payback”. Sweet film.

Once were warriors. 1994. A realistic portrayal of Maori people stuck in poverty in New Zealand and finding a way to rise above it. Good brutal fight scenes from the guy who played Bobba Fett in Star Wars.
Another great film.

City of God is amazing.

My nomination: Cider House Rules

Gigli.

Suicide Kings-Christopher Walken is da man.

Also Donny Darko, it took me forever to finally see it but it was great.

Is that the one with a bunch of people on the beach on the DVD cover? I’ve been tempted to check that out a few times as I pass by it at Best Buy…

Pootie tang

Pootie Tang, the musician/actor/folk hero of the ghetto, is chronicled from his early childhood to his battles against the evil Corporate America.

allstar comedic cast Wanda Sykes, Chris Rock and Jennifer Coolidge.

“Sine Your Pitty on the Runny Kine!”

Romper Stomper- Russell Crowe plays angry Aussie skinhead. Great fight scenes.

Riki-Oh!: The Story of Ricky- source of the Daily Show’s (y’know, when it was still hosted by Craig Kilborn, remember him?) infamous “exploding head” image. The most ridiculously violent piece of cheese you’ll ever see.

Sexy Beast

Equilibrium

Time Bandits

I was just about to post this. It was in the $ 5.50 bin at Wal-Mart.

Time Bandits
Hysterically bizarre movie.

Down by Law- A Jim Jarmusch film with Tom Waits, Roberto Benigni, and John Lurie. It’s a Louisiana prison movie.

Suspect Zero - Thriller with Ben Kingsley, who is always awesome.

The Proposition - A western set in the Aussie outback. Good flick, but it’s a little slow.

The Machinist - Pre-Batman Christian Bale.

Also…

Night on Earth

Four Rooms (at least the last 2 rooms which were done by Robert Rodriquez and Quentin Tarantino)

Diva

Coolest guy ever.

I don’t know how under the radar it is because I was two when it came out. But I really liked The Razor’s Edge with Bill Murray.
