Exactly, which is why I asked. He seems to think the wall is not a real emergency. I agree, but then he says healthcare and gun control are real emergencies. Does not compute.
Concept being if Trump waters down the concept of a national emergency, Dems will be happy to abuse it when the wheel spins back around.
I definitely don’t think gun control would be a national emergency, and we’re probably 5-6 years away from HC costs getting high enough to entertain the thought
I know many want to read this as “business and usual” and “other President’s did it” …so what’s the big deal. (And I’m sure Hannity and Fox are already in “justification mode”…
As I have found out; the precedent is that NO modern president has used a national emergency to appropriate funds when Congress wouldn’t.
It’s a huge deal, especially to “constitutional conservatives” - if any existed.
We’re at the end of a deliberative legislative process that results in the executive branch signing the bill presented, and the executive then declaring an emergency that defies the very bill he just assented to.
The illogic speaks for itself (and courts will rule against for that reason) but the scary part is that a President even attempted it.
I’m not taking either of these sides but guns kill more people than illegal immigrants. Lack of access to healthcare bankrupts people and potentially kills them.
I’m using what could be used for arguments for them. I mean it’s no weaker than picking a time when illegal crossings are at their lowest in a while to say it’s an emergency now. Plus the scary thing is you can probably justify anything as a national emergency now. Ban chocolate because obesity is killing Americans.
Trump, questioned by @PeterAlexander, concedes there’s no national emergency to justify building his wall. “I didn’t need to do this.” “I just want to do it faster.” A gift to all the lawyers preparing to sue him.
I get what you’re saying, but it still doesn’t explain how they’re “real” emergencies. Arguing they’re more of an emergency than illegal immigration, fine. Claiming they’re real and the border crisis isn’t, I don’t get.
