The point being, of course, that such an absolutist approach is absurd.
Prosecutorial discretion is a longstanding practice, and yet we don’t seem to be living in anarchy.

Here is an excerpt I found on the GoogleFu network from about 3 years ago.
U.S. steel production of 98 million tons last year was less than what China exported to the world at 100 million tons.
China now has more than 1 billion tons of capacity, up from 200 million in the early 2000s, notes Kevin Dempsey of the American Iron and Steel Institute. Almost all of its production is owned by its government and is subsidized; its steel is selling in the global market at one-quarter below world prices.
Other governments are pursuing the same strategy of underwriting new steelmaking capacity and targeting exports as part of their employment and economic development strategies. The American steel executives said Vietnam, Japan, Brazil, India, Turkey, Russia and South Korea are all subsidizing their industries and dumping under-priced product on the U. S. market. India plans to triple its steelmaking capacity over the next 15 years. “All of that excess steel is looking for another market because steel makers want to cover their fixed cost and they want to operate as much capacity that they can,” says Dempsey. “They are offering it at prices that people think are too good to beat.” The result: U.S. companies “are being crushed.”
Hell to the YEAH! Go globalist or go home Dumb FKN Americans.
Where are you going to find the tax dollars to *subsidize the steel industry?
*Obligatory sarcasm: I guess we’re (Republican’s) are all for corporate welfare now…
Even before it was a four letter word, I was fairly nationalist. I think that is dirty pool to subsidize then flood the market like that. Like it or not though, we are supposed to be somewhat free market capitalists.
I mean, what are we supposed to do? Impose tariffs on countries that subsidize production?
You’d have to be an orange haired buffoon to even suggest that in our “globalize because boobs /we don’t need those dirty people/jobs in our society” society.
The problem is Nucor, US Steel, and the others are small potatoes compared to sovereign countries. The US government has been taken over (by this I literally mean the politicians are in pocket) by a handful of wealthy, borderless corporations that loosely HQ here (part of their operation) and the jobs are gone.
Jobs for tens of millions are gone to enrich a tiny number - maybe a few thousand.
Laissez Faire economics does not work WHEN only your (my, our) country abides by its parameters.
Guess who knows that? Read the excerpt above.
This was not in reference to the Trump thing. Just FISA as a whole. It’s abused just like every piece of legislation with good intentions. American citizens can be subject to warrantless data collection and surveillance as long as they are not directly targeted.
Mamadov is a Mar-a-Lago member? How did I miss this?!!
I really, really can’t believe this - six or seven years ago my parent company were contacted by some of Mamadov’s cronies about a possible deal regarding on-site inspection o on a slew of their suburban construction sites in Azerbaijan.
I distinctly remember the explanation why we outright rejected even their initial tentative approach - “If we get involved with these guys in any capacity we’re all bound to end up on all sorts of watchlists and we’ll probably get arrested if we step on US soil”
Oh the naivete. Oh the irony.
Side note: Mamadov hotels and resorts are where top members of the Iranian regime come to indulge in truckloads of Russian prostitutes. Seedy doesn’t even begin to describe it.
As much as I agree with the statement “write better laws,” I have to side with ED here (holy shit).
Prosecutorial discretion can be used on a case by case basis. Obama tried to abuse this by issuing executive orders ignoring millions of offenders with blanket prosecutorial discretion. In a specific case like this one, the charges can be lessened and deportation averted.
100% agree. But a lot of idiots voted for him because he reduced gray topics to black and white without asking whether or not we SHOULD make them black and white (another great example is -2 regs per +1 reg)

It also largely would keep Obamacare’s protections of those with pre-existing conditions, but allows insurers to charge higher premiums to those who let their coverage lapse.
While Republicans had long argued their plan would give consumers more flexibility, the reality is that the GOP replacement bill was not necessarily designed to cover more people than the Affordable Care Act did. The CBO score is expected to reflect that reality, which is part of the reason it is not expected to be part of the bill’s initial unveiling.
I am really unclear how any new bill that gets rid of the mandate is expected to lower costs. Can anyone enlighten me on that?
Lower than pre Obamacare, not lower than now
This story is lame af… nobody got wire tapped…Its classic Trump deflection… The walls are clossing in blood in the water. Hes creating drama with the inteligence comunity so when all the Russia shit comes out he can claim its false due to some beef… Face it your boys a Russky
What? Did you mis type that? Pre Obamacare insurance was way cheaper than now.
Fuck these assholes. It all has to go! Pre existing conditions, 26 yr old’s on mommy insurance, and all of this made up bullshit that has to be included in insurance plans drives up costs. The whole goddamn thing drives up cost. That’s why the whole goddamn thing has to go.
Republicans are digging their own graves with this. If they pass a halfassed repeal prices will continue to rise and they will get voted out. If those Republicans that have a pair of testicles stop this from passing and nothing gets done, prices will continue to rise and they will get voted out. Either way anything short of a full repeal will not be good for Republicans. Expect socialized healthcare via Elizabeth Warren and the crew in 2024.
I personally saw a decrease in my healthcare costs, as did my wife’s entire family, as did most of the people in my city. Also if you segment the change in health care costs by income bracket, you’ll see that millions of people saw decrease in their premiums as well.
That’s ON TOP of many insurance companies actively raising premiums to cover the short term losses (and to stick it to Congress) before the incentives kicked in. Not saying it’s not socialist, but it was effective at its target.
For the most part the only people who’s premiums decreased were those who received subsidies. With the “Cadillac Tax” going into full effect last year, even the unions are starting to feel it.
edit: many premiums did not increase, however coverage got worse and plans include huge deductibles.
Which (to your point) is the same thing as premiums increasing. It was out of pocket extra expense for some. That being said, the only reason insurance companies were able to get away with that shitshow was because Congress didn’t opt for any guarantees that they wouldn’t bend the consumer over for it. People call it “capitalism” and “supply and demand” then subsequently bitch about big business in DC like it wasn’t funded with that free reign capitalism.
How can Congress increase costs on insurance companies and then guarantee they not raise prices?
