This won’t address the letter of your comment, but perhaps it will address its spirit. From the Science article:
“Clearly, current attempts to regulate MTM/VF practices are inadequate. Mining permits are being issued despite the preponderance of scientific evidence that impacts are pervasive and irreversible and that mitigation cannot compensate for losses. Considering environmental impacts of MTM/VF, in combination with evidence that the health of people living in surface-mining regions of the central Appalachians is compromised by mining activities, we conclude that MTM/VF permits should not be granted unless new methods can be subjected to rigorous peer review and shown to remedy these problems. Regulators should no longer ignore rigorous science. The United States should take leadership on these issues, particularly since surface mining in many developing countries is expected to grow extensively.” [emphasis mine]
Don’t take this the wrong way, but before costing billions of dollars and thousands of jobs, I want to see proof, not spirit.
I fish on creeks in this region. I see proof of their ability to support life every time I plunk a fly down on the surface of a pool or drift through the riffles. I also hike the hills and forage for edible mushrooms with enough of an adeptness to provide them to a pretty wide circle of family and friends. usually in the range of 150 too 200 lbs./year of various types.
Granted, I don’t have a degree that says I completed the assignments that my professors prescribed for me to have the scholarly title required to write a paper like the one above. But what I can do is walk into the woods and walk back out with proof to the contrary of what it states.
Furthermore, the writers request that methods are developed and subject remedy a problem that hasn’t been proven, at least in that article, to exist.
Destroying the enviroment so big biz can get richer In the name of few working class bros isnt smart. For example 500 guys get jobs but 5000 get cancer from shity water…
As far as the wall goes its a retarded Idea…will cost billions and wont do shit…theres been advances in technology like planes, boats, shovels, and ladders… Wont get built anyhow you can bet on it in Vegas btw
This is why flyover America is done with mainstream media. You want to see breitbart and salon go away? Then the big boys need to act like adults and stop producing this. Trump is alot of things, but mass murderer isn’t one of those things.
I’m not going to defend some of the hysteria-inducing headlines we see in the press, but no one is claiming Trump is a mass murderer. But some of the moves Trump’s made and things he’s said have been cause for alarm. Such as trying to turn the American people against the press (see the tweet @loppar posted yesterday), talk of jailing political opponents (Clinton), blaming the country’s ills on “others” (immigrants, Muslims, democrats, etc.), obsession with national security, etc.
When the media refuses to fact check and instead throws every rumor, opinion, and postulation of fertile imaginations 24/7, that doesn’t qualify as news. It is being carried on to the point of character assassination (rather than merely defamation), shaping policies and actions detrimental to the country, and inflaming people beyond civility to the point of violence.
Regarding Clinton - her activities are beyond the pale. She was incompetent as SOS, and l agree she should not be tried for saying drone strike wikileaks guy or Russian reset, etc. But some of her bs like pay for play, deliberate refusal to obey classified protocol, along with destroying hardware/emails. These are treason just like the Rosenbergs, imo.
I agree that we have to protect the environment. But, not at the cost of paying higher gas prices. If we were allowed to drill for oil (in it’s many forms) we would drive down gas prices dramatically. Ganted there is an obvious short term harm to the environment but I don’t see a whole lot of long term damage. What am I missing?
You start out saying your not going to defend the hysteria headlines and then you actually try to defend them.
Talk of jailing Clinton was justified based on her incredibly unscrupulous record (also great political move since half the country hated her).
Turning the American people against the press is misguided. Did you know how low of an opinion the American people had of the press before Trump ever arrived on the scene? The press today is a joke. FOX is the right wing media along with some talk radio. The rest of the press is absolutely out to destroy Trump. And the public gets it. That’s how a candidate could win and spend far less than his opponent. The fact that he’s continuing to hammer the press is justified as they continue to lie about him.
As for his tough talk on illegal immigration since when do we get to pick and choose the laws that we obey? Seems only fair that those who have broken the law get their just dues.
As for your claim that Trump has an obsession with national security. How can a President be overly vigilant regarding national security? That IS the most important part of his job. It’s certainly not building a welfare system and tolling up the number of people on food stamps like Barry did.
You are missing the well documented and ongoing history of; especially throughout the last century and into this one; of contaminated, unlivable lands; poisoned water supplies; disastrous oil, and coal sludge-spills (both economically and naturally); poisoned waterways, rivers, lakes and ponds; pockets of significant increases in cancers and birth defects closely linked to environmental contaminants;…
The list goes on and on…and that is with regulation.
The Conservative/Right-Wing Media is proving to be MUCH more of Political and Economic force (the proof goes from City Councils to State Legislatures to Washington)…than this “Big-Bad Bear” the “Liberal Main Stream Media”.
Am I to believe that something Wolf Blitzer or Scott Pelly says carries more weight than what Rush Limbaugh says?
From my vantage point, this “LMSM” seems pretty weak.
You are basically saying that the right wing media is more powerful than the MSLM and I strongly disagree.
Your example above proves my point in that the audience of Scott Pelly and Wolf Blitzer might be made up of a great span of varied viewers from far left to middle of the road and even some right wingers. Whereas, Rush Limbaugh speaks everyday to a loyal audience of center right and far right listeners. Hence, no one is changing their minds after listening to him. He is there to tell the loyal what they want to hear.
Also, one more major difference and the most important. Pelly and Blitzer are supposedly news casters, they are not opinion guys. They are there to report what is happening not pitch the news either right or left. Yet, they do. Unfair I think. Neither Limbaugh or the rest of his ilk like Hannity and others pretend to be hard news people. They are there to give their opinion only.
What the left has done has blurred the lines between opinion and real news. I am not specifically talking about purely fake news like the latest AP wire about Trump sending in 100,000 National Guard Troops to hunt down the illegals that was simply despicable. I am talking about supposed hard news guys pitching the news for the left in more subtle ways. This has been happening for decades it’s just far worse now because of the hatred toward President Trump.
