So how is Mexico going to pay for the wall if some new market opens up and Americans buy products from that instead? The only way Mexico pays for the wall via tariffs is if they eat those tariffs in their entirety, right?

You assume that Mexico (a democracy beholden to its citizens) will act in a rational economic manner. The general attitude in Mexico, ever since Trump took office is a big F U north of the border. Pena Nieto is facing enormous political pressure to fight back against Trump but is trying to find a middle ground because he knows the economic impact. Nonetheless far left groups are gaining popularity, and the country is destabilizing. If you think we’ve had problems with immigration and Cartels before, wait till Mexicos economy really tanks…

Maybe that’s the plan.
Destabilize Mexico so much that the country essentially breaks.
Trump uses that as an excuse to establish military presence on the border. Then become a Duerte-copy and declare war on Mexican drug cartels attempting to bring anything over the border into the U.S.
And then claim that all illegal immigrants crossing the border are drug mules and give the army permission to kill them on sight.

Interesting. I wonder how hard Obama will push back on this–first via anecdote (“As I sat there at my desk I saw a sea of papers–there must have been a million, maybe a million and a half!”); then by arguing that the photos were taken at different times of the day, with his photo taken at an intentionally misleading angle; then he’ll point out that the veneer on his desk’s surface only makes it look like there are no papers on it; then by calling up the WH photog and demanding they release a more-cluttered photo of his desk; then by blaming the disgusting, dishonest, biased opposition party, er, media, for having it in for him by publishing such negative photos in the first place; etc.
Whatever he does, you can be sure Obama will be tweeting about this incessantly for weeks. Inexplicably, he just won’t be able to let it go.
