But, afaik, the executive order isn’t stripping permanent residents of their permanent residency statuses. Based on the article that thunderbolt23 posted, it’s preventing them from entering the U.S. on a case by case basis, and the executive order is supposed to stand for 90 days; it’s not indefinite.
In any case, I just found it interesting that you’re opposed to muslim immigration in general, and yet made a differentiation between muslim permanent residents and citizens.
A really good review of Trump’s orders re: immigration, and this guy is no dove. And one thing to point out in addition to the substantive stupidity and heinous immorality of the order is the incompetence of it:
How incompetent is this order? An immigration lawyer who works for the federal government wrote me today describing the quality of the work as “look[ing] like what an intern came up with over a lunch hour. . . . My take is that it is so poorly written that it’s hard to tell the impact."
And they didn’t vet the order with other agencies to bulletproof it (or attempt to bulletproof) against challenges. Thus, as this guy points out, the Trump administration has opened up immeasurable opportunities to challenge in court.
Now, Zeb and Raj will crow that this order is more awesomer than the Emancipation Proclamation, but Right Wing Court Eunuchs are going to Right Wing Court Eunuch. In reality, this is going to be a disaster for Trump.
“NBC is reporting that the document was not reviewed by DHS, the Justice Department, the State Department, or the Department of Defense, and that National Security Council lawyers were prevented from evaluating it. Moreover, the New York Times writes that Customs and Border Protection and U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services, the agencies tasked with carrying out the policy, were only given a briefing call while Trump was actually signing the order itself. Yesterday, the Department of Justice gave a “no comment” when asked whether the Office of Legal Counsel had reviewed Trump’s executive orders—including the order at hand. (OLC normally reviews every executive order.)”

"But in the rational pursuit of security objectives, you don’t marginalize your expert security agencies and fail to vet your ideas through a normal interagency process. You don’t target the wrong people in nutty ways when you’re rationally pursuing real security objectives.
When do you do these things? You do these things when you’re elevating the symbolic politics of bashing Islam over any actual security interest. You do them when you’ve made a deliberate decision to burden human lives to make a public point. In other words, this is not a document that will cause hardship and misery because of regrettable incidental impacts on people injured in the pursuit of a public good. It will cause hardship and misery for tens or hundreds of thousands of people because that is precisely what it is intended to do."
Re: Hamilton: if true, ok, so? That means Jefferson wouldn’t? The guy on Mount Rushmore who routinely places in the top five of American presidents, and whi helped pen the Declaration of Independence? I can live with that.
And were I a “shell of a man” at the end of 2017, well, at least you and I would then have one thing in common. But rest assured, I’ll be fine.
Well, not entirely. This type of thing has been done plenty in the past. Even Obama halted the Iraqi refugee program for a time. Hell immigration as a whole was all but halted from the 1920’s until the 1960’s.
So does this go against what America is? It depends on what you believe America is. History tells another story though.
Obama banned only those connected to the regime (politicians and military officers and their family members) and those that have contributed to the economical collapse of Venezuela (see above). This is the consequence of many Venezuelan “revolutionaries” and their family members snapping up luxurious villas in Florida - something that caused outrage among those Venezuelans that actually fled the regime.
Oh by the way, Trump’s ban is retarded. Seriously retarded. It’s not smart-but-evil, it’s just so retarded it barely registers on the “evil” scale.
First of all it’s not a Muslim ban - the most populous Muslim countries are excluded from the list (Indonesia, Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey…)
Secondly, let’s look at the nationality and ethnicity of the perpetrators of the recent terrorist attacks on US soil connected to salafi islam - Saudis were the the majority of 9/11 attackers, San Bernardino shooters were Pakistani (trained in surprise, surprise Saudi Arabia), the Boston Bomber was a Chechen, the Orlando shooter was of Afghan descent and so on.
Notice a pattern? Those countries are not included in the EO. The homeland of the fucking Taliban and the main financier of salafi terrorism are not on the list.
And not to mention all those jihadists with Algerian, Moroccan, Tunisian, French, Belgian and Russian passports that, you know, make up the majority of rank-and-file ISIS soldiers? Not on the list.
But a Stanford professor and winner of the Nobe prize equivalent in mathematics is on the list:
And the PhDs that the US badly needs are on the list:
Not to mention multiple Olympic gold medalist Sir Mohammad Farah (yes, as in “Sir” given by the Queen Elizabeth)
By the way, this is so fucked up how Trump is fucking over the Iranians, not only Iranian Jews but also those that have fled the regime and even renounced Islam. Many Iranians who fiercely oppose the regime and live their entire lives in the West retain their Iranian passports out of patriotic pride and hatred for the regime - they still want to be counted as Iranians.
So a BBC reporter, a female nurse from Glasgow and even a member of the German Bundestag (Parliament) who’s ironically president of the German-American committee are on the list are stranded because their return flights included changing planes in the US because of their dual nationalities.
And if someone asks - zero shias have committed terrorist attacks on US soil.
How exactly is the US government going to really know who was connected to the regime? I bet it effectively met a ban.
Obama did ban Iraqi refugees in 2011 for a period of 6 months
The countries in the ban were selected by the Obama Administration as countries of concern. The Obama administration are essentially the architects of this ban
How many refugees did your country take? Which country is that by the way?
