Nor to the hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who died. Not to mention the resulting regional power imbalance that led to the ascendency of Iran, which has in turn led to increased militancy on the part of the Arabs.
Eh, I don’t take up an apprenticeship if I need plumbing work. I just ask for someone else to do the work.
The benefits aren’t THAT attractive. GI bill or not.
Not that they would take me. One of the few benefits of having medical issues (no, not bone spurs). Nobody seems keen on sending me off to die for their cause. .
I don’t think it was important enough to sacrifice my life. The folks who signed up previously and at the time will have to speak for themselves.
But seriously, back when the Taliban harbored Osama, fine. He’s dead.
Back when we knew exactly where to find the operational WMD programs, fine. Now I’m pissed that Bush and his administration oversold intelligence, having stripped the caveats out of it.
“Were” being important here. I will never support anything like that again. I will always assume intelligence has been fluffed up, and that it’ll turn into nation-building.
And I would never die for a country. Maybe for the GI bill, back when I was a poor little Fl cracker right out of high school. Maybe the benefits would’ve been worth the risk. But, again, medical issues.
Family and in actual defense of the innocent? I’d like to think so. But, luckily for any relatives, they haven’t had to rely on my bravery.
I believe/believed sacrificing your life to protect your country is a worthy price to pay but the problem is putting your life in the hands of those who are not willing to do the same.
Further, sacrificing my life for a country isn’t even my main objection. It is the taking of other lives for my country that I find most objectionable.
