Religion has, over the centuries, encouraged and justified those very crimes against humanity. Slavery? The Bible does not condemn it. Killing? In spite of the commandment, there is a lot of God approved murder in the Bible. But you just skipped those parts.
They either miss the point or are afraid to answer. The Bible simply says thou shall not kill but we actually modify that black and white law and have terms like justifiable homicide.
