Well convicts are released and often became wardens or gaurds punishing prisoners themselves

So that has sort of been an omnipresent mentality… but at the same time we weren’t a nation full of wet blankets… quite the opposite. Which invovled a schizophrenic man who was banned from buying assault rifles obtaining mutliple on the black market and embarking on an extremely brutal, disturbing mass shooting
that led to an initial buyback scheme and gun ban (which has since been tightened many times and although our media makes out as if it was a huge success… it wasn’t… we have more guns now than we did in 1996, similar firearm homocide rate)
But then it enroached onto banning katanas, nunchucks, many pocket knives, pepper spray, airsoft guns, paintball guns… eventually we sort of banned anything that could be considered a weapon
Victoria just banned machetes because of one incident involving kids using machetes to attack one another at a mall
My parents (from lawless, extremely dangerous areas of South Africa) respond “good, no one needs a machete for anything anyway”
fucking stupid answer, because it’s been such as slippery slope into bat shit crazy nanny state madness, I used to think American’s were crazy for saying “first they’ll come for the guns, then additional liberties” but look at what fucking happened in Australia
And the police powers here… There was an autistic guy (I mentioned in earlier post) low functioning, no naggressive… non verbal… Police found he had left hospital without being authorized to do so. The one policeman tackles him and the other one while smiling stomps no the back of the autistic mans head three times. He is now braindead
Family tried to sue.. failed… as a probe into it found no unlawful conduct (despite the video being availbale online, in America this would have led to George Floyd style riots but way larger scale because this guy was actually completely innocent) and Daniel Andrews (victorian premier who was a complete lunatic, socialist sympathiser who tried to sign Victoria onto the belt and road initiative) and overall piece of garbage other politicians were petrified of) used his power to indemnify the officers involver
I’m not for punishing police uneccessarily or defund the police BS but unlike America the AFP and state police has a lot of sway in policy and encouraging destructive policy because they get more funding.. There is still the corruption that was present in the 80s but instead of taking bribes they have hands in the pockets of politicians and clearly seem to only care about making money
I’ve mentioned before we have random alcohol testing and roadside drug testing. But the drug testing doesn’t look for impairment. It looks for the tiniest trace of THC in your system and you can pop positive up to 14 days after use on occasion (or soemtimes test positive despite genuinely having no exposure) but the penalty for having a trace in your system is now I believe a 2000$ fine, permenant loss of license for 3 or 6 months
Repeat offence can be a criminal record
Having a prescription in most states (even if it’s trace THC in the extract) for say cancer related nausea/reduction in appetite… no excuse, loss of license immediately and huge fine… And our population… doesn’t seem to care despite us having one of the worlds highest rates of cannabis use (not that I’m a regular pot smoker)
It’s so regressive… so the ADHD medication I have can actually lead to me testing positive for amphetamine on these tests… and at which point I can present my script and it’s up to the police discretion to potentially force me to leave my car on the spot and go home until I can go to court and clear it up… Often they’ll be fine but it takes one power hungry dick to say " don’t care, you clearly have amphetamine in your system, take it up with court"
