I have spent 7ish years in Uni. and I can confirm that there are some pure assholes and idiots there too. Having a degree is not a bulletproof evidence of someone’s intelligence and vice versa.
This reinforces the notion that my “European” view about free speech is not so different from yours.
It’s okay to criticize immigration, Islam or Israel. Being anti-semitic or anti-islam or whatever is different story if you attack the group as a whole with ill intentions.
Yeah, that was a little tongue in cheek, being that I’m easily as intelligent and in many cases much more so than a lot of snobby so-called academics, but was denied a grant to go to a community college because of my history.
Now ties to terrorist groups, organizing new ones here, all of that nonsense- well, thats academic freedom or some bullshit.

Even as a private citizen or organization, one can be opposed to and speak out in many ways against who ever or what ever they want.
Even Ku Klux Klan or many other notoriously racist hate group members have the right to freely associate with whomever they choose.
They arent qualified to recieve any government grants or contracts though.
Pretty much. The ideological background is rooted to same sources, so similar constitutional base is no surprise.

Thats why its pretty upsetting to a lot of people to see, on one hand, institutions providing protection to members of organizations that are holding rallys and recruiting people that promote violence, but on the other side of the ocean people are getting arrested and prosecuted for farting into a phone, saying simply distasteful or mean things to or about people and other silliness.
Luckily this is not the case in most parts of Europe either.
Limits of the free speech is of course hot topic here too. It has been and it will be. Debating about free speech is part of the free speech after all.

Post Oct.7 when was there any call for violence on campuses? I did not really follow them but, I have not read anything suggesting there was.
A lot of criticism of Zionism, Israel’s policies, and military actions. Calling it a genocide.

If the argument is that a private university shouldn’t get any government funds period, that’s one thing. But to say you can get funding provided you are willing to out students for anti American speech is something different.
With that said, schools do have speech codes and they should be enforced uniformly. If not, then it should be a matter for the courts, not the White House.

If they have government contracts, and they are not compliant or in defiance of the requirements for them, that its a matter for the White House.
What would happen to the GI bill of somebody who decided to go on a campaign of hate against his fellows, and they decided to go through official channels to get rid of him?
Why would it go poof? Because when you sign up for it, there are qualifying criteria?
Trump wants to change the requirements to something that should turn off most Americans. Gathering data on students the government judge to be anti American and demanding universities out them is exactly what Hitler did. Since we aren’t dummies who don’t understand that history teaches us things, in a very repetitive way, we know that anti American will really mean antigovernment. We could have asked Sophie Scholl what being a dissident means but we know what happened to her, her brother and her friends.

Probably nothing. As far as I know, you can break the law and still receive the benefits. That is, if you are a vet. If you receive anything other than an honorable discharge, you might lose the GI Bill.

I have no problem with non citizens who spout anti American rhetoric being kicked out. American citizens however, have the right to believe and say stupid things. If the government truly has a problem with that, it should shut down all of the online media platforms where these ideas fester and spread. Should we pull a China with regard to the internet? Kent State was our Tiananmen Square. Those kids were considered anti American by Nixon.
