You can jail drug users or rehabilitate drug users. “Statistics” say that rehabbing drug offenders works better and costs less than locking them up.
All of the Marxist schools of thought in academia seem to be a great way for people who struggled with calculus to enter higher education.
It is definitely bad policy making. The problem is that the radical policies being implemented come directly from the DSA political platform. That is clearly the direction Maine Democrats have been rowing in. Their policy platform is extremely vague, but in broad alignment with DSA ideology. There is no mention of law enforcement or public safety on the Maine Democrat party platform, for example.
Transgenderism is fully incorporated into all aspects of public life. DEI commissars, and yes they are commissars, are present on the government payroll and across our institutions. Bail has been reformed in accordance with DSA ideology. Legislative efforts to implement DSA sentencing concepts are currently underway. Harm reduction is increasingly incorporated and funded, while our prosecutor is not. Concepts of equity are fully incorporated in our public schools and children are being taught to treat each other differently based on a now-dizzying array of identity groups.
Here in Lewiston we are no longer having the academic discussion about how these policies might play out. They have been implemented, and I’m literally writing a book about the effects. It has been mind-boggling to live under and experience. All while the grift seems to be crumbling nationwide.
We certainly live in interesting times.

This is actually true.
It is also the question which is more important. Moral sense of punishing crime, or preventing it.
I’m telling you both, the COSTS of that policy far-outweigh any beneficial clinical outcome measured on a per-patient basis, and it isn’t even close. Harm reduction has been a disaster for everyone who has to live with it. There are other ways to cast a compassionate net for those people.
The experts either didn’t think of that, or didn’t care.
“For America to live, Europe must die.”
Might be. Haven’t seen the data in this case.
I live in Finland, where crime statistics are very low. It’s difficult to say how much it’s because prisoner rehabilitation protocols, how much for other things.
But Finland is very, or relatively, leftist country (from your perspective). Hahah.
Our most right wing parties do connect with rebuplicans thought.
The costs I speak of cannot be measured clinically or in dollars and cents. I’m not sure it is possible to calculate the lost economic development our downtown has experienced. Business close and that can be measured, but not the businesses that never open in the increasingly bad conditions. Not the toll it takes on children who grow up in a world where it is normal to see people using drugs and engaging in prostitution, along with regular gun battles that have also been a recent development.
I am of the Thomas Sowell school of Basic Economics, and I believe people respond to incentives. There are a lot of incentives to destroy yourself on the streets of Lewiston, and many people do exactly that.
Conveniently for politically connected DSA-adjacent nonprofits, every single troubled and needy person is a potential revenue stream for these organizations.
I’m living in a society were it is our policy to allow people to destroy themselves in public, bringing about the commoditization of human suffering.
It is the greed of need, and what’s happening here is being put into much clearer focus with DOGE.
Harm reduction in full is a concept I’d consider a social program and could work in a stable, closed border society with plenty of resources to build somewhere for these folks to go.
The embrace of contradiction inherent in Socialism renders this another concept that has been co-opted by the movement and is effective as an instrument of power and control. Harm reduction can’t exist side-by-side with everything else they want, but that’s not a problem for them.
It functions as an instrument of power in a very simple way. Everyone who packs up and leaves or never moves here in the first place is much, much more likely to vote Republican. Everyone who shows up is likely to vote democrat, especially since anyone who shows up can vote.
They’ve “synthesized” their way into all of these incompatible positions, which all conveniently enable grifting. Let us not forget that Hitler was a grifter, too, as they all were. His economy of conquest was a particularly gruesome grift.
I haven’t looked at Finland since I was a young leftist who just thought Socialists wanted us to be like Finland. Otherwise I haven’t learned much about Finland.
Good job fucking up the Socialists! You guys ran a helluva war.
Donald Trump just showcased the FRAMED MUGSHOT visitors must walk past as they enter the Oval Office.
Democrats are now in the FO phase of FAFO.
Americans need to understand that England, is not Europe.
Unlike the liberal Onion, which used to be great during Bush’s term, the Babylon Bee can still deliver the LOLs when it isn’t opposition comedy.
I’m on board with this new concept in lowering American taxes.
Also, just like that, the ideology is out of the military. I imagine 10 years from now we’ll still be trying to detect and root out “institutional transgenderism”.
Isn’t England on the same tectonic plate that contains the rest of Europe. I suppose some would consider England as the isles off the northwest coast of Europe.
I believe you will find more sources that state England is part of Europe than otherwise.
A more interesting discussion would be what continent do Greenland and Iceland reside.
Greenland is part of the North American continent
England and Iceland are part of the European continent
Not exactly: part of Iceland sits on the European tectonic plate and the other part sits on the NA tectonic plate
I’d say that gives us causus belli to invade that half of Iceland and rename it to Benjamin Franklinland.
Vance to the “leaders” of Europe: “If American democracy can survive 10 years of Greta Thunberg’s scolding, you can survive a few months of Elon Musk.”
Is that a causus belli comment? (trying out a new term ^^, which I had to google)
Brexit. Also, most of the effeminate thinking that allowed woke culture to exist is from the Anglosphere. France banned the wearing of veils, which would include burqas, in public. What two nations would never do that? The US and England.
If we couldn’t beat inbred, 125 pound goat herders, how could we beat Vikings?
Agreed…however, due to geopolitical and cultural reasons…most will say its on the european continent
