Coach,
I was simply curious if you have ever seen any cases where a person’s training has caused a case of iritis. I was diagnosed with this last week and have been taking dilating drops as well as steroidal drops. It seems to clear up and get better until I train.
For example this morning, my eye looked fine although still a bit blurry. I went into my sets and after I began getting into my working sets, the eye suffering from iritis seemed to feel a bit swollen as well as become bloodshot. My opthamologist didn’t seem to think that resistance training could be a cause of iritis but suggested that I not lift until it completely subsides. Have you ever heard of anything like this?
I have not heard of iritis, however, if you have venous insufficiency within the eye, you can have increased intra-conal pressures with exertion which might mimic iritis. If you are unable to drain the blood via venous congestion, you might develop ‘back pressure’.
You have probably seen the people who can become ‘bug eyed’ at will. They do this because they have venous backflow into the veins behind the eye. When they bear down “val salva” they increase the pressure in those veins causing the eye to ‘bug out’.
I don’t have venous insufficieny that is mocking iritis…I have iritis. My eyes don’t bug out. I have scar tissue in my left eye adhering my iris to my lens preventing my pupil to dilate or function properly. The scarring occured after a bout with iritis. Thanks for the idea though, I will mention it to see what he thinks.
