how much you want to spend?
bikes are expensive.
what are your goals? to be a great rider?
just want to have a bike so you can lift one day and ride or run the next?
if you wanna get serious, you need to get a good bike, and train year round.
lots of people this time of year go out drop a grand(cheap) and ride a few rides, and come a rainny day or a windy day or cold days and the bike gathers dust.
so tell me your goals and i will give you ball park on $

Ideally under 700 bucks (like I said planning on going used)
Yes I know bikes are expensive and it’s unlikely to find anything in this range decent but I can hope.
Long-term goals I’d like to start competing, I will mainly be using it as a cross-trainer for rowing putting in 20-30 miles a day on it at the least. But as I said, I’d love to start competing (I’m not sure of the classifications). As someone who has competed on the national level for rowing and has an ideal build for this (all legs, high VO2, 5’8", albeit carrying a bit too much weight up top) I feel as though I can probably do pretty well, especially if I start dedicating this as my primary goal.[/quote]

The most important thing is to find a bike that fits you, even if it may not be the “hot” model or make. To do this, you should spend the time and $ to get properly fitted. Most high-end shops offer this service.

Otherwise, it would be like buying the coolest running shoes, only to eventually find that they don’t fit your feet, cause blisters, and you really can’t run effectively in them.

It doesn’t make sense to try to recommend a specific bike to buy used without knowing what’s available to you as quality options in any specific size will likely be very limited in your price range.

Well I was measured at the local BS to use a 54 cm frame. I saw this on e-bay and was thinkin if it’s a good buy (and I don’t have to get it at the “buy it now price” I’d grab it if you all think it’s good.

Side note here’s a spectator close up of stage 8 when Lance went down on the first crash.

Westcoast where did you play lax at?

@ UCSB.

Awesome stage today, very entertaining, especially the last 5 minutes. The riders got destroyed today, and are going to be in some serious pain. As long as Contador is being challenged, I’m happy. Having Levi in 6th ain’t to bad either.

I started the team at Ole Miss (lacrosse).

Definitely a great stage. I think Schlek is gonna be the winner if he can manage to put some time between him and contador on these mountains before the last TT. He definitely looked in better shape today. That being said, Levi isn’t out yet either.

Specialized is quality, although I’d be surprised if you get that one for $800. The 105 components aren’t anything to get excited about, but they can be easily upgraded if and when you’re ready.

We’re riding Tarmac SL3s this season, like Saxo and Astana, and they’re pretty sweet.

Well the 800 price is the buy out price, so I could definitely get it for 800. I’m also willing to take a donated starter bike :stuck_out_tongue: I’ll even pay the shipping.

Some breaking news on the Landis investigation below. Tyler Hamilton will probably sing like a canary when he testifies. I think Lance is going to have his fair share of sleepless nights from now until the end of this years Tour De France. Things are not looking good for Lance these days.

Grand jury subpoenas issued in Landis investigation

Federal investigation takes a step forward

Grand jury subpoenas have reportedly been issued to witnesses by federal authorities as the investigation into Floyd Landisâ?? claims of doping takes a step forward. The New York Times cited several sources that spoke on the condition of anonymity when it revealed that subpoenas had been issued.

The paper didnâ??t name which witnesses had been or will be issued with subpoenas. Itâ??s known that current BMC Racing Team rider George Hincapie and former professional Tyler Hamilton have been approached by the federal investigators.

Hamilton has previously indicated he would provide investigators with his full cooperation if subpoenaed, telling The Wall Street Journal last month: â??I am aware that there is an investigation of other people in progress, and if I am subpoenaed to provide information, I will provide my full cooperation.â??

The criminal investigation, led by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) special agent Jeff Novitzky, is focused principally around Landisâ?? recent allegations of systematic doping practices at the US Postal Service team. Landis confessed to doping himself and claimed wide-spread doping at US Postal during his time riding with Lance Armstrong’s squad in an e-mail to USA Cycling CEO Steve Johnson, which was leaked to Cyclingnews and other media outlets.

The paper indicated that itâ??s likely Landis is one of the people to be subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury.

It would be nice if the government stayed out sport.

I really don’t care what Lance has done, but Floyd’s credibility is shit. It’s blatantly obvious that he’s freaking jealous of what Lance has achieved, and this is causing him to act like a little bitch.

Agreed, everyone one is jealous, and all the accusations are coming from people with zero credibility. Lance is one of the greatest athletes ever, and nothing is going to change my mind on that.

Either way, any mild fan of cycling, as I consider myself, knows that doping is rampant in the sport. Sports in general, involve cheating in every facet of every game, as athletes do whatever they can to gain even the slightest advantage over their opponents.

There is cheating in every fact of life, get used to it. In addition, I really think society needs to get back to the whole innocent until proven guilty thing, although I know that is much easier said than done.

Kinda crazy but here are the “Top 15 Cringeworthy Tour De France Crashes”:

Having competed extensively, I’m confident that doping isn’t as rampant in cycling and most other sports as the general public and media believe, although I know that it was an accepted practice for major team leaders, such as Lance, to do so for quite a few years. From that standpoint, I believe that he competed on a level playing field. I don’t think that he or any of the major riders in this year’s Tour are doping any longer, however.

By the way, if you like Le Tour, check out the Giro sometime. It’s my favorite race to watch since the terrain is often more extreme and no country beats Italy when it comes to cycling-crazy fans. In comparison to the Giro, the Tour is somewhat predictable and the riders tend to ride more conservatively.

I was suprised today to see cyclists chugging cans of Coke at the re-feed stations. Don’t you think there is something a little more advanced/effective that they could be consuming mid-race?

Caffeine is always a nice boost but the amount in a Coke isn’t going to ramp their heart rate up much like an actual energy drink may. The sugars will be used almost immediately. That being said I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s something more they could be having.

I’d be interested in what you find, I am looking into getting a bike also as the elliptical machine has gotten pretty monotonous. This site seems to have some great prices, but I know very little about bikes:

Back to the tour, I think it was pretty ridiculous that Renshaw got sent home for his actions. That was by far the most exciting part of the race thus far, got me up out of my seat and everything.

Cavendish is a beast.

renshaw’s headbutts: reasonable response to being barged

his change of line during a sprint though to block off another sprinter - terrible

that being said i think getting kicked off the tour for the latter is too strong, and the tour organisers made it clear the reason he was kicked off was the combo of the two, so i feel he was unlucky, as the first was BS.

hope losing his lead out man doesnt ruin the rest of cavendish’s tour, i want to see him wear the green!

re coke: yeah no way is it optimal cycling nutrition/ rehydration, but for these boys its largely an issue of what you like. proper sport drinks make a lot of cyclists want to throw up after a couple, they are very sickly. coke doesnt have this property, but still has sugar. its way more important to feel right than get the optimal nutrition. the man who holds the bike record for lands end to john o’groats was fueled mostly by sausages.

Farrar lost his leadout man today too due to a broken elbow so it kind of makes things more up in the air which should be more interesting.
