Too Old to Start Again?

I have, yes. Actually that was my first course choice coming into the Army. I was lied to about the availability of the option and as a result, I enlisted. I don’t regret it, but it’s another thing that turned me off to the system.

In my opinion, prior enlisted men make the best officers, I just don’t have it in me to stay in the Army.

Out of curiosity why did you chose English w/ Emphasis on Creative Writing?

I enjoy fiction, reading it, writing it, sending manuscripts out to literary publications only to have them rejected with the most perfunctory amount of courtesy.

Seriously though, it was a pursuit of happiness thing. Even a few years ago I didn’t understand money the way I do now, or the state of the economy and job market.

I went back to school at 28. Best choice I could make to change my career path to go into the medical field. Majority of my classmates were over 25 as well. Seems like a natural progression to get through university or college (around 22 or 23), accumulate life experience for a few years and then go back to school with the maturity and focus necessary to stick with it.

I apologize if this is off topic, but what are your thoughts on a college grad enlisting as a 35 series (I’m particularly interesting in the Foxtrot, Mike, and Papa designations) or a 37F? I have a BA in International Relations as well as German and graduated with a solid GPA (3.84) if that helps. Afterwards, I would hope to go to an elite graduate school and work in Foreign Policy in some regard.

Its never a bad thing to work on what you like to do on your free time, after studying/work etc.

Just thought I put that out there.

I’m a 35P. You can accrue some great experience, IF you are dealt the right hand. It depends a lot on where you get stationed, who you meet there, etc. etc.

If I were you, with the ultimate goal of going into foreign policy, I would absolutely work towards becoming a commissioned officer, and get DLI put into your contract if you want the language. The enlisted track is fine, you learn a lot, but it will frustrate the hell out of you. Prepare to have no control over your life, and if things don’t work out in a way that is as beneficial to your future as planned, too bad.

The army is downsizing, which gives you a lot less leverage while negotiating your terms of service. Keep that in mind.
