I would define a “troll” in the given context as a person who deliberately posts statements completely contrary to the common opinions and values on this site (which, all the diversity notwithstanding, definitely exist) for the sole purpose of annoying people (in contrast to initiating a prolific discussion).
Examples: QuadeTheFinest, Al Shades, the two??? kids from the Bruce Lee thread,…
By all means, I agree that disagreements between two members which don’t fit the above-mentioned description should be singled out. Sorry, no medals for bickering…
honestly, the only posters on the Nation ive seen that could be considered trolls were quadethefinest (during the time that his brother and friend used his handle) and marijuologist (simply because he wouldn’t answer direct questions on his own thread). all the others i know about were just expressing opinion.
if anybody wants to see actual trolling just go to an extremely popular forum like bungie.net. if it’s the same as it was when halo2 first came out then there are still a bunch of deleted posts and banned posters due to guys posting viruses, starting new threads as often as possible about an established to be annoying subject, posting in CAPS exclusively, etc.
the Nation doesn’t have trolls; we got dumbasses.
Agreed. Honestly the last thing that should be encouraged around here is “troll killing.” The less drama on this site, the better. Stupid threads should just be ignored and not responded to. There is nothing more frusterating than an otherwise good topic being ruined by two adults, one in their late teens and one in their late thirties engaged in a pissing contest on the internet over nothing.
My only complaint about this site is that too many threads end up like this…one or two pages of a good debate/discussion followed by 6 pages of, “oh yeah, well you are a…” Ignore the dumbasses and everybody would be better off.[/quote]
Are you refering to XcelticsX’s post that got 2 stars and all the unecessary bickering after the fifth or sixth bumb?
Im not sure if you call that trolling or not.
Interesting. Most of the above-mentioned threads start on a serious note or at least are intended to do so and develop into a joke. In contrast, this one went the opposite direction.
Anyway, I recall a similar discussion, albeit focused on different goals in the beginning, taking place on a thread started by Olympiclifter a while ago. It goes without saying that it was impossible to reach a common denominator.
Regarding the quality of threads, IMO, it is not so easy for one single person to spoil a “high quality” thread. Besides, I guess all except the greatest “dumbasses” would refrain from trolling and bickering on an informative and constructive thread.

You know what? you’re absoluteley right about your observation. Kinda cool, actually…
I see what you mean. Then…because no one can or could define a Troll exactly (and as someone stated above, the mods are the real Troll killers)…then would we say that a “Troll” label is subjective to peoples opinions? And if this is true…do trolls truly exist once they get through the Mods (think of the Matrix “There is no Spoon”)?
As stated previously…many times people label dumbasses as trolls but these people are just…well, dumbasses and not true “trolls”. Although a few do indeed get through, it seems…
Let’s remember that many times people choose to disagree and tend to get rather heated about their opinions. Sometimes this can be misinterpreted by many as “trolling”. Then it can become a downright pissing contest talking about “Oh yeah? Well I did and you are just stupid.” Which in turn is replied to in the same manner (if not more attacking/insulting).
But you are absolutely right…it takes two (or more) people. One is the troll and the other (or others) is the ones who choose to acknowledge the trolls and they “take the bait…”

Case in point: Would this quoted post be considered “trolling” because of the way the message is phrased, or just a comment?
Even though the name calling is totally uncalled for, and the post is rather disrespectful and overbearing, I’d say it is the latter…people are entitled to their opinions and the right/need to express them, after all…
Maybe others would think it is trolling?

it’s definately not trolling.
trolling is trying to irritate the fuck out of somebody. if i came to your house and did all the most annoying things i could think of without vandalism like putting my hand in front of your face saying, “not touching, cant get mad! not touching, cant get mad!”, stood outside the room making the Most Annoying Sound in the World like jim carrey in dumn and dumner, or if i reorganized all your kitchen shelves i’d be trolling.
that’s the real life version of cyber trolling.
the Nation doesn’t and never will ever have trolls. the mods take care of that. quadethefinest and marijuoligist and i guess lightpower and perhaps ghosts of reach were NOT trolls. almost, but not quite.
another thing to keep in mind is that trolls mustn’t be confined to one thread. a true internet troll will go every where on the site and troll.
if nobody gets it than maybe i’ll hafta try and get mod permission to start actually trolling so everybody can actually see what trolling is (just a thought, it wont actually happen).

i didn’t check the lightpower thread while it was up and didn’t hear how superfunnyawesome it was til it got deleted.

bongologist was more of a gremlin than a troll. he stayed to one thread (which he created) and was too baked to even progress beyond gremlindom and into orcdom. much less trolldom.
IMO, the only kind of actual troll the Nation could ever get is by someone so dedicated and so clever that he develops a respectable post count by giving out bad advice. all the while backing it up like he actually believes it. of course he’d be more than a troll. he’d be a dragon.

OK, I’m still new, but is Troll also defined as an ass-wipe or dipshit?

definately, but that doesn’t mean that all asswipes and dipshits are trolls.
a troll has one and only one purpose: to create havoc, and if able, pandemonium among the entire board. he does this by posting unarbitrary, repetitive, inflammatory, and as often as possible. as i stated earlier, a board i hung out on a while back (bungie’s board, the creator of halo and halo2) is far more popular than this one and has no pre-post moderation. even a little amount of time on the forums and i’d find posts deleted and users banned for posting uber disgusting pictures, making entire post about the evil of a certain race, posting viruses, posting illegal stuff, etc.
