Things That Piss You Off

There’s also the Doughnut burger thing. My friend tried it and almost puked

You spent 75$ on soy sauce, msg, cooking wine, ginger and garlic?

*What @anna_5588 said

It was more than that. Unfortunately we followed it to a “T” for the first go around and there were multiple things bought that required something dumb like 1/2tsp but we bought a quart bottle of it.

Also, spices at Chinese supermarkets are dirt cheap

We Chinese ppl use so much of it, it’s practically subsidized (in China), unless you choose the fancy Japanese brands

Ha, I was a manager at a PT clinic that did a ton of work with post knee replacement patients. The skinny people were walking around pain free in 2-3 months. The fat ones had scar tissue buildup, horrible pain, and some of them had to be cut open again. The doctor’s heart was in the right place, but nobody anywhere NEAR 300 lbs should be getting a knee replacement. I wouldn’t do it for anyone over 250, to be honest.

Don’t know how this isn’t a rule for law enforcement - if you’re obese, you’re relegated to a desk job unless you lose the weight, and if you don’t make the weight within, say, 6 months (which shouldn’t take long because you wouldn’t be allowed to even get to morbidly obese in the first place), you’re suspended without pay until you do. In the military you were in the Physical Conditioning Platoon (Pork Chop Platoon) if you were overweight. You’ve got a gun. If you can’t run, you tend to use your gun. If you happen upon an incident requiring you to save a life you won’t be able to function properly. Fat firefighters, EMTs, cops, COs, and military are all not only unacceptable, they’re dangerous (not people who just are big, I mean FAT - soft and obese).

Interestingly, I have found more skinny guys who struggle with PT tests than the heavier ones. I mean, fat is fat, the real big boys are going to struggle. But a lot of the “kinda chunky” guys tend to do okay, I think because they know they need to bust some ass in order to stay in reasonable shape. Skinny guys dont work out, think they will be okay, and then are in for a rude surprise come PRT day. My old command had the minimum 1.5 mile run time set at 10:30, and almost everyone who consistently failed (One exception) was on the skinnier side.

Then there was this one Navy wrestler who was by every definition obese, yet ran the 1.5 mile in 9 flat. Hands down one of the most impressive, and entertaining, feats I have ever seen. The guy looked like a bowling ball just steaming past way thinner dudes as he passed them in the run.

While on the topic of things that Piss Me Off, Irresponsible gun owners. More specifically, people who are irresponsible around kids. Even more specifically, my wife’s uncle.

The guy is a pretty high level salesman at a fairly reputable tactical firearm accessories company. He spends most of his time traveling around the country, selling sights, mounts, or some other firearm piece to various police and military units. Mainly catering to SWAT and Special Ops type stuff. He gets to do all the tactical shooting courses, knows guys from Spec Ops of every different branch, honestly a pretty cool job.

But the guy is a freaking tool, and is going to get someone hurt. His house is a freaking mess, with guns, knives, and tomahawks just littered around everywhere. He has easily north of 40 firearms in the house, maybe 15 in a safe. Shelves with half empty mags, holsters, sights, like the worlds most dangerous military surplus store. I first met him when I was 16, and I saw a loaded AR-15 just leaning against the coach. He had two three year olds at the time. When I asked him if he was concerned about it, his response was “no, they know not to touch my guns. Besides, they arent strong enough to rack the bolt anyway.”

His kids are growing up now, and I pray he has started to use at least a little common sense. I spoke to his wife about it at the time, but I haven’t been back to their house in years now, no idea if anything has actually changed. Tacti-cool guys like him, who wear $200 combat pants for a damn trip to target, but have never actually spent a day in uniform, just leave a bad taste in my mouth.

True- that’s why I said, not guys who are just big. There are plenty of very strong people carrying around a decent amount of fat on a large frame that can move fast and far. A simple PT test can separate the fluffy strong guys from the soft fat ones.

To extend that - it pisses me off that when I got my rifle and my glock, neither vendor asked me to demonstrate basic safety protocols before handing it to me.

Treat every weapon as if it were loaded.

Never point a weapon at anything you to not intend to shoot.

Finger straight and off the trigger until you intend to fire.

Safety on until you intend to fire.

And the forgotten but arguably most important one that would stop stray bullets killing children - know your target and what lies beyond it.

If you can’t demonstrate knowledge of all these safety rules, you shouldn’t be able to own a firearm. If anyone feels otherwise, we should get rid of drivers license tests ASAP.

Same answer that’s used for everything else - staffing. Another reason for us - union. The union wouldn’t let the Department implement any standards because it would hurt the older guys.

And another one - worker’s comp. I heard a firefighter got injured playing basketball on duty. The city didn’t want to pay for it but he said it occurred on duty and being fit was required for his job. That made it easy for the city to drop any requirements.

I know there are arguments against all that, and I agree. But those are the easy arguments here.

Boca Raton gives officers 90 minutes per shift to train and they don’t get raises if they don’t pass their annual PT test.

And again, this is not a realistic expectation, but we could solve this by compensating officers properly. Turn the ‘police academy’ into a year-long intensive schooling and training program, increase police salaries across the board, and give significant hazard pay to those working in particularly rough areas.

The sad part - this will never happen.
The really sad part - people will claim there’s “no money” to make that happen, when proper allocation of state funds would absolutely allow us to nearly double LEO salaries if people werent concerned with lining the right pockets all the time.

For the amount of responsibility and power cops have in our society it should be a minimum 4 year school, with the last year as a training officer in the field. Cops should start at 80k and go up to 250k with 80% pension upon retirement. Annual PT, shooting, hand to hand, and verbal judo training and testing. Law test every 4 years. Fail a test and you forefit that years garaunteed raise plus placed on unpaid leave until the test (given weekly) is passed. Loan forgiveness for any college grad who completes 5 years as a cop, vehicle stipend, etc.

But where to find that huge chunk of money…

Fuuuck that. You want them to start with a higher salary than most if not all engineers and end up making more than many doctors while having the loans paid off? Dangerous job and often under appreciated no doubt but, that is ridiculous.

Don’t know how it is in other states but, in CA-LAPD-LASD you pretty much have to have a 2-4yr degree to be considered. Unless you know someone.

It is worse for Fire fighters 2 yr degree in which you do an in school academy and EMT experience. It is an ordeal.

**Don’t know if you were around when gregron posted but, it took him quite sometime to become a fire fighter and I am pretty sure he was ex military and EMT.

I am an engineer. Yes, I want the cops showing up to my scene to be the best and brightest. And the only way I know to attract that is hard, continuous training, money, and benefits.

This is assuming a perfect world.

  1. this is about in line with what military officers are paid
  2. Many, many engineering jobs start out at over 80k.

The ability to be judge, jury, and executioner with a ridiculously low prosecution rate even in the face of negligence? Nope, it is far more ridiculous to arm people who have had a few months of training and expect them to effectively enforce the law.

I know of 2 people close to me that had hip and knee replacements, both were advised to do weight before the operation. One of them did and is now healthier and happier in her 60s than she ever was in her 40s, goes to the gym 4+ times a week etc. The other did not and has now had the leg removed. She’s bed bound over a year later, can’t visit her grandchildren, and is dealing with a whole host of knock on health issues. I’d also add that one of them followed doctors rehab orders, one of them didn’t.

Los Angeles Sheriffs Dept requirements:

  • Be at least 19.5 years old to apply / 20 years old at appointment
  • A U.S. citizen or eligible resident alien awaiting citizenship application decision
  • A U.S. High school graduate or GED, or passed a U.S. high school proficiency test
  • Valid Class C driver’s license (Out-of-state applicants can use a valid license from their home state while filing, but will need a valid California Class C license at the time of hire)
  • Be in good physical condition and free from any medical conditions that would interfere with the responsibilities of a Deputy Sheriff
  • Have at least 20/70 vision in each eye, correctable to 20/30 with only minor color impairment
  • No major hearing impairment (no more than 25 db loss in the better ear and 35 db loss in weaker ear)
  • No felony convictions or currently on probation; misdemeanors may be disqualifying, depending on the number, type of violation, and date of the violation
  • IV – Arduous Physical Class (Must be able to lift 25 lbs while bending, twisting or working on irregular surfaces and may require extraordinary physical exertion)

Even if the exclusivity of this department has led to the unspoken requirement of a degree, my point still stands, and pretty much everywhere besides what you’re describing the requirements are not particularly heavy. Improving training and increasing incentives for LEOs would only yield positive results.

Burbank police who won’t quit stopping me for stupid crap while riding my bike.

Grossly ignorant people who betray their ignorance online and offline.
