Things That Piss You Off

How do you guys afford college over there in the states? I am from the UK but whenever I watch a movie about someone applying to universities in the US they either have to be insanely rich or lucky enough to get a scholarschip.

It’s getting near impossible for many people. I took on over 50k in debt to get my degree (and I went to public school). I have been paying it off for 8 years already and likely have at least 8 more to go to get finished.

Thankfully the company I worked for paid for my Master’s, but most folks don’t have that luxury.

There are a great many merit based scholarships. So they aren’t all about luck.

A bachelor’s at a state school (if you live in that state and don’t get charged ā€˜out of state’ tuition) is still less expensive than a luxury car.

I guess if you good at sports that is also a sure fire way to college?

Would love to play american football and be a jock hahaha and get all those cheerleader girls

Not really. Schools that give out scholarships for sports are incredibly picky and have the entire nation to pick from. A lot of athletes don’t get full rides either.

Sometimes if you play an oddball sport (like rugby or LaCrosse in the US), some private divison 2 or 3 schools will give out great scholarships.

Tuitions started rising like crazy when the US government started handing out loan money like it was candy on Halloween. The schools no longer had to be super competitive to get students, they only had to make it appealing to attend that school.

Check out the chapter on this in the The Death of Expertise book. Very enlightening.

First two years at a JuCo. Second two years at a state school. Work full time throughout college. Bonus points for living in car for part of it.

If this bubble ever bursts, lots of schools that have no business (non sequitur -most MBAs are just so, so useless) existing will disappear.

I was just in Sichuan for a week for a summercamp and had the pickles, didn’t think they were that good. Maybe I just didn’t have good ones though

no I haven’t. I also live in the states though with dead relatives seperated by an ocean

They are an acquired taste

This fucking meeting won’t end and I need to take a SHIT!!!

Check your ego and forget about status. A degree is a piece of paper and unless you’re going to a super elite school for a lucrative career, you can go just about anywhere.

Working through college isn’t unreasonable, either. A full time schedule might have you in class from 8am-12pm most days of the week. That leaves plenty of time to work. Most people just choose to have fun instead.

One of my college roommates took out a student loan for spending money so he didn’t have to work.

I was on the phone (webex) so…

lame

I just tell people the echo is because I’m in our small conference room on speaker phone.

Just schedule all your hours on the weekend so class schedules can’t get in your way. I worked
F: 2200-0600
SAT/SUN: 1400-0600
SUN/MON: 1400-0600

40 hours every weekend no problem. Best part is nobody ever wanted my shifts.

I worked 6pm-4am my senior year. It was great. 36 hours, with overnight pay.
