The Real John McCain

Here’s some funny, light stuff about McCain for a change.

SOMEWHERE in NORTHERN IOWA ?? The unthinkable has happened. Senator John McCain met a question, while sitting with reporters on his bus as it rumbled through Iowa today, that he couldn??t ?? or perhaps wouldn??t ?? answer.

Did he support the distribution of taxpayer-subsidized condoms in Africa to fight the transmission of H.I.V.?

What followed was a long series of awkward pauses, glances up to the ceiling and the image of one of Mr. McCain??s aides, standing off to the back, urgently motioning his press secretary to come to Mr. McCain??s side.

The upshot was that Mr. McCain said he did not know this subject well, did not know his position on it, and relied on the advice of Senator Tom Coburn, a physician and Republican from Oklahoma.

His press secretary, Brian Jones, later reported that Mr. McCain had a record of voting against using government money to finance the distribution of condoms.

All this took place on the second day of the reprise of the ??Straight Talk Express?? bus trips that Mr. McCain made a central part of his campaign in 2000. It also comes as Mr. McCain has eagerly been trying to ease strains with social conservatives in the party who, for the most part, do not support using government money to pay for condoms.

A transcript of the encounter follows. (Weaver is John Weaver, his senior adviser, and Brian is Mr. Jones, his press secretary):

Reporter: ??Should U.S. taxpayer money go to places like Africa to fund contraception to prevent AIDS???

Mr. McCain: ??Well I think it??s a combination. The guy I really respect on this is Dr. Coburn. He believes ?? and I was just reading the thing he wrote?? that you should do what you can to encourage abstinence where there is going to be sexual activity. Where that doesn??t succeed, than he thinks that we should employ contraceptives as well. But I agree with him that the first priority is on abstinence. I look to people like Dr. Coburn. I??m not very wise on it.??

(Mr. McCain turns to take a question on Iraq, but a moment later looks back to the reporter who asked him about AIDS.)

Mr. McCain: ??I haven??t thought about it. Before I give you an answer, let me think about. Let me think about it a little bit because I never got a question about it before. I don??t know if I would use taxpayers?? money for it.??

Q: ??What about grants for sex education in the United States? Should they include instructions about using contraceptives? Or should it be Bush??s policy, which is just abstinence???

Mr. McCain: (Long pause) ??Ahhh. I think I support the president??s policy.??

Q: ??So no contraception, no counseling on contraception. Just abstinence. Do you think contraceptives help stop the spread of HIV???

Mr. McCain: (Long pause) ??You??ve stumped me.??

Q: ??I mean, I think you??d probably agree it probably does help stop it???

Mr. McCain: (Laughs) ??Are we on the Straight Talk express? I??m not informed enough on it. Let me find out. You know, I??m sure I??ve taken a position on it on the past. I have to find out what my position was. Brian, would you find out what my position is on contraception ?? I??m sure I??m opposed to government spending on it, I??m sure I support the president??s policies on it.??

Q: ??But you would agree that condoms do stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Would you say: ??No, we??re not going to distribute them,?? knowing that???

Mr. McCain: (Twelve-second pause) ??Get me Coburn??s thing, ask Weaver to get me Coburn??s paper that he just gave me in the last couple of days. I??ve never gotten into these issues before.??

This went on for a few more moments until a reporter from the Chicago Tribune broke in and asked Mr. McCain about the weight of a pig that he saw at the Iowa State Fair last year.

But… what did the pig weigh?

Shit, man! Now I got rice and broccoli all over my computer’s screen.

I agree that it’s amusing - that people would think this issue is a matter of importance in picking a president.

Money quote:

…if you’re still worrying about how to vote, I have two pieces of advice. First, spend your time studying foreign policy, where the president has more direct power, and the choice of a candidate makes a much bigger difference. Second, stop worrying and get back to work.

Well, call me what you will, but when a general writes op-ed columns that echo point by point Bush’s position (which most Americans reject), I ask myself questions. He went on talk-shows and from what I’ve seen, he might as well have a “Bush is awesome” pin and campaign for the guy.
Or, does Bush just echo the “warhawks?” Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Maybe Bush is just pro-war… and the Pentagon is all over that shite.

Do tell. Legions???
Let’s go back a bit. BB claimed that the Iranian leadership wishes to sabotage McCain’s candidacy by destabilizing the home of one of the largest Shia demographics outside of Iran. And to support that, he gives us the word of of that Petraeus dude. I then disagree, and say that Petraeus is willingly inflaming the situation with Iran - assuming that invading two of their neighboring countries and deploying a couple of giant warships a few miles from their shores isn’t enough. Why? To make Bush’s (and by extension McCain’s) position a little bit more tenable.

Tell me now, if Petraeus was disobeying the “commandier-in-chief”, how long do you think it’ll be before he gets sacked?
Nonsense.

Yes foreign policy matters, but McCain has been just as clueless on that as he has been on, well just about everything else. It would be as funny as his stupidity on contraception and the (gulp) economy, if it weren’t such a god awful tragedy that was of course entirely predicted(by folks with far less “experience” no less). Worse, his advisors are mostly of the idiotic kind as well.

John McCain is an old fuck who needs to honestly stop running now. His foreign policy makes me shit my pants. And then it makes me want to take the shit from my pants and smear it in his face. Like Bill Maher said…“Old soldiers never die they just get young ones killed”. Couldn’t be more true. I’m so serious on this and I hope someone calls me on it…If gramps is elected I will move to another country 100% no bullshit. I don’t care if his issues are different than Bush on all other aspects…one of the most important issues (iraq) is WORSE.

Seriously, we have NO business being in the middle east and whats worse about the whole thing is that TILL THIS DAY, people still believe the bullshit that iraq was somehow linked to al qaeda is ridiculous. They had no connection to iraq UNTIL we decided to invade iraq…and even NOW they are a SMALLLLLL portion of the “terrorism” that occurs there. It is totally out of control there…between the sunnis, shiites and kurds…and with mccain in power not only will we stay in iraq but move on to iran. PLEASE PEOPLE DO NOT ENABLE BUSH 3!

Okay, McCains out. Let’s see…that leaves us with a lying lesbian bitch and an inexperienced border line racist.

Hmmm…Bush isn’t looking so bad anymore…Bush senior that is.
An inexperienced borderline racist??? LOL WOW…this is why this country is fucked right now. Voting doesn’t work in a mental institution does it?

Uh… Yeah. Read his first book. Read Shelby Steele’s book about him too. Nevermind. Why would anyone want to read a book a candidate has written nowadays? He goes to a church that teaches a Sandinista-style liberation theology. But that doesn’t matter. Let’s make him pres!

Hillary is a lesbian?

I guess it’s a matter of whose Ox that gets gored.

Or whose Gore got axed.

What bothers me the most about McCain (and all of them) is that they have never had real jobs where they had to produce something. McCain comes closest, having been an officer, but I don’t think one of them understands what it means to actually produce, as opposed to administer the production of someone else.

We’ll get a POTUS who has a brushing acquaintance with topics who comes under the influence of handlers, much like Woodrow Wilson and Colonel House.

Of course, maybe THAT’S why these people are candidates.

Well, you know what they say: if you can’t do, teach; and if you can’t teach, govern.

I just read in the NYT that McCain’s son is a Marine lance corporal [formerly] in Iraq. Never mind that the kid is not an officer, but how many senators (either for or against the war) have kids in Iraq?

Nominal Prospect promised me an administrative post in the NWO when it happens. I’d rather rule a country, so I had asked for Australia (great beer! Love Oz beer!).

I am surprised that more teachers don’t go into politics, control freaks that we are.

There are plenty of teachers in local politics. Maybe their lack of inherited wealth or connections to political machines hampers their access to national elected office.
