The Push to 2020 Has Begun!

Look at how many fat people we have in this country; that’s a sign of great decision making and foresight by the masses.

The point I’m getting at is, we like to listen to people, who lack any qualifications, who tell us things we like to hear when it comes to the here and now. The smart people who tell us things we don’t like to hear about something in the future we ignore.

Who is this “we” you speak of. You are correct about many, there are some who are rational though. Hopefully being rational becomes more popular.

If I say they, they will get offended because they never think they are they.

Trump in front of a microphone and press corps during an emergency is a disaster. That’s pretty undeniable. When words matter, others NEED to do the talking.

That said, policy-wise (not financial), I think his administration handled and continues to handle CV within the range of acceptability for this blue-stater. There are always things that could have been done better when using hindsight, but I think the admin has struck s pretty good balance with their response to CV.

The long-term financial implications of the unrecoverable trump tax bill, combined with the crazy stimulus packages for CV are terrifying. I fear my generation will bear the brunt of the fallout when SS/pensions collapse and we are left supporting our parents, and gaining nothing from the system we poured parts of our paycheck into for decades. All because the people in power wanted to artificially inflate the already robust economic good times in order to gain 4 more years of power.

This is the seat that the Young Turks host attempted to win in and got BTFO’d. If this flips red, I will howl with laughter.

Cenk Ughur, the reverse Midas touch.

This was a pleasant surprise for me. A Republican just got elected to Congress. In Los Angeles County, California.

A sign of changing times, or perhaps Russian meddling to sway the foolish electorate?

If you need to ask…

I’m blaming Gerry and his meanderings.

Surely there must be some nefarious explanation for why the people of LA would vote for a likely transphobic racist who may want to put kids in cages.

Given the strength of Russian collusion allegations, that seems like a likely explanation. That narrative is still intact, right?

SoCal used to be pretty red. Still is conservative in many parts including coastal areas. Where he got elected is in a pretty moderate area of LA county if im not mistaken. My experience is that there has been support for some moderate republicans in liberal areas as a means to push back against some of the overly progressive liberal policies and politicians that have recently come into power there. Moderate liberals voting for the local GOP candidate to try and swing the balance back towards the middle, not over to the right.

I wonder how conservative (or Trumpy) the guy is. Maybe he is just a moderate latino with social conservative values that appeal to the large latino population there? Or maybe he is a trumptastic reaction to liberal progressiveness run amok.

I don’t really know much about the guy, except that he’s a Republican fighter pilot.

In all seriousness, this may just be a simple desire for some competence in government. More of the same hasn’t been working out all that great for California. Local typhus outbreaks may seem mild compared to a worldwide coronavirus outbreak, but I have to imagine that things like hellscape homeless encampments and the viability of doing business in California are still on many voters’ minds.

We’ll see though. I checked out Biden’s website and it looks like he’s going to fix all of the problems. He’s got a plan for almost everything, all laid out right there. Fixing all of the problems is going to sell well with a lot of voters.

It’ll be an interesting election.

I think it is unfair to solely focus on a few localized problem areas of CA like skid row that make for clickbait news stories. There is much more going right in CA than is going wrong. There is also a lot more to CA than just SF and LA.

CA is still the worlds 5th largest economy, so id say companies still see business as viable there. Lots to improve upon for sure though.

As for Bidens website…

I don’t, and I’ve written about “why” extensively in the homelessness thread I started. No need to cover that here.

I’m also not suggestion that it is the only thing on voters’ minds. It seems silly to believe that it isn’t something built into most voter’s calculations. Especially the ones old enough to have watched it take shape and grow worse over the years.

They’re a jurisdiction, just like the rest of the country. I suppose we’ll find out in November if this is a special election fluke or a sign of something more.

Yes, it’s not like the 25th congressional district ever voted Republican… Except, you know, 13 out of 14 last elections.

Didn’t realize that!

Guess this is a nothing-burger!

California voted GOP 8/11 times from 1948 - 1988.
Wonder what changed?

I’m not big for plans laid out by politicians. I like a politician who doesn’t bother telling me a plan and he just says “trust me no one knows more about (insert anything here) than me. No one but me can fix it.”

That’s actually a proven winning formula as recently as 2016. It would actually be smart of Biden to offer less details as when you don’t tell people how you would do it they can’t fight you on the details. Just have to get them to believe you through sheer force of will.

I like that, too. Why would I vote for someone that wasn’t better able to manage my life than I? Of course, that brings into question the fact that we are even allowed to vote on which superior being rules.

I know you’re being you, but I would rather vote for someone who thought they could work with others to find solutions knowing their own personal knowledge was limited.

Give me that over someone who doesn’t think they need to work with others to find solutions because they know no one needs to be telling them something because they already know everything about viruses, isis, trade etc.
