We don’t officially do that. Unofficially, we have always done that. The people of our country do that. The documents that define our nation don’t do anything.
Black students demand segregated spaces from white students
How would you feel if minorities wanted to divvy people up according to “good” and “bad” ? Is that creepy ? Would Malcolm X smile at this ? Have we become a totalitarian country now ? Where oh where art thou condemnation ?
I’d disagree with them and not honor their request. It’s ridiculous and contrary to the values of the institution.
To your other question, no, the ideas of a section of undergraduate students isn’t the same thing as national policy, so, no, that isn’t an example of totalitarianism. Good Lord.
We’ve officially done it a few times - the Chinese exclusion act is an example.
But since the birth of the country, we allow and welcome immigrants of all kinds, and we don’t take only the “good stock” of the world (however defined). The mere exercise of determining who the “good stock” is is repulsive.
And it’s antithetical to classical liberalism, which venerates the dignity of the individual.
And this also why I think the Republican Party may not survive this election - with the nativist push from Trump, backed by his troglodyte supporters, and backed by the support of those who may not be true nativists themselves but will vote for him anyway in the name of supporting the GOP nominee, our (nominally, at times) conservative party is now in danger of becoming a truly reactionary party.
If it does truly morph into an American version of National Front, and sadly it appears that way, I’ll do what I can to hasten its demise, and be the first to dance on its grave.
Eligibility for public assistance is directly related to income. I doubt it is a shock to anyone that immigrants represent a larger percentage of low income households. It is important to consider state policies when looking at assistance programs. In Texas the waiting list for public housing is between 24-36 months. There is a lifetime limit of 5 years (less in some areas/states) and work requirements to receive TANF assistance. If your state extends the benefits that is a state issue. In Texas no able bodied adult is eligible for medicaid(pregnant women exception). In Texas food stamps are slightly less than $5.00/day per eligible participant. I will concede the expense associated with public education and lunch programs. The article mentions a $10.00/hr. job; that’s about $1,440.00 a month take home before considering EIC. At minimum wage it’s about $1,044.00. I understand that low wage jobs were never intended to support adults with families; however more and more of the jobs being created are low wage. In Texas we are doing fairly well. Of course we also lead the nation in high school dropouts, teenage pregnancy, adults working minimum wage jobs, full-time workers without health insurance, etc. If we are serious about the issue it is as simple as going after the employers.
You would be either run out of office or pressured to resign, and any lack of that on your part would deem you a racist. This maybe one set of students now, with time you will see this type of shit spread. It starts with an outlier, and what used to be respectable institutions like government and academia would put a stop to this shit, they accommodate it.
This is a symptom of the Ferguson effect, and there is no sign of it stopping soon.
There is nothing repulsive of determining what is good stock when it comes to immigrants. The same way you are choosy with who you let into your home, stop the pearl clutching when it comes to people using common sense.
Most immigrant people come from countries who are used to relying on government, or view government as being the solution. You cannot allow so many of such people and not think it will affect our way of life.
I listened as long as I could. Thanks for the unintentional comedy.
This guy - clearly, himself an immigrant - comes to America and bitches about how we are too generous to immigrants, especially the ones that are racially inferior. No wonder you like him.
But our generous system predated him - and you - so leave if you don’t like it.
It’s not that the system is above criticism, far from it - it’s just becoming more obvious that the complaints coming from other immigrants come from animus beyond a mere desire to improve policy (as in, this guy’s rants about the “obvious” intellectual defects in the higher percentage immigrants using welfare).
Do you have any statistics that you can point to regarding unskilled immigration to the U.S. in the past decade or so?
My understanding is that getting a worker’s visa is not all that difficult, but actual legal immigration (As in getting a green card) is tremendously difficult if nothing else than because there’s a finite limit on a yearly basis.
So I don’t quite get what you guys mean by millions of unskilled immigrants.
Unless you mean illegal immigration, but that’s a failure to uphold existing policy and, imo, should be a completely separate issue from what you folks are talking about.
To TB the US is just one big economic zone and that’s it. It doesn’t matter to him whether they’re culturally compatible with American culture, if they bring prosperity or hardship to current Americans or even if they can speak English.
He even refers to the immigration system as being “generous.” Generous → an implicit admission the US is helping outsiders at the cost to it’s own people. I think it could argued people with self-immolating beliefs as TB has are acting immorally.
Hey TB walk over to your nearest black ghetto and let them know you’ve decided to worsen their already poor job prospects because you wanted to be “generous.”
