The thing is, nobody had a hard time believing it because we all know generally that Trump is the stupidest (and, relatedly, most ignorant) major presidential candidate in American history and specifically that he doesn’t know his ass from a hole in the ground “when it comes to nuclear” (to borrow his own appallingly stupid, toddler-talk wording).
We know that he’d never heard of the nuclear triad, which describes a decades-old, basic organizing principle of American nuclear weapons capability. We know furthermore that he was too parodically stupid to figure out what the nuclear triad was even after it was literally handed to him as a paint-by-numbers description embedded within the moderator’s question.
Similarly, we know that he doesn’t understand even the most basic principles of nuclear non-proliferation, even going so far as to suggest that maybe what the world really needs is some more nuclear tension in the far fuckin’ east.
Add to this all of the general markers of Trump’s spectacular and unique stupidity – his unfamiliarity with the most basic things about the United States Constitution, his inability to speak in coherent adult English sentences, his promise that Putin will not be going into Ukraine…the list quite literally goes on and on – and what we have is one VERY plausible Morning Joe story about Donald Trump being a know-nothing dumbass on the topic of nuclear politics.

He started as a one-man handyman business and grew it into one of the largest construction companies in NM. He went on to become a tax-slashing governor. I’m old enough to remember when that would bring a year to the Republican eye as the most authentic kind of conservatism - an American success story who took the values of the American Dream that allowed him and his hard work to become a success story and translated them into a fine tenure as governor.
Now, he’s slandered as bush league by (many) Republicans in favor of a…wait for it…born-rich Democrat who’s never read the Constitution.
