Look, I’m quick with a keyboard…but even I am allowed one posting mistake per year, dude.
By the way…GO SEE THE DAMN MOVIE.
damn, you edited your post
I honestly should have just typed " x2" on Professor X’s post as I totally agreed with him.

Aim higher!

how about this one

How about we keep it precisely on topic?
Black dude should have lived longer.
Jesse Jackson needs to get in on this.
OK. Something is wrong here. Either Professor X or Nards has been infected. Let’s burn some blood samples in a petri dish before I start agreeing with HH:
Check our mouths! I have fillings!
Heh heh, being a dentist only hurts Professor X this time.

I know how this works. Someone checks your mouth for the fillings and you bite their arms off at the elbows.
Just saw it yesterday.
BIG ho-hum. Especially if you’re a fan of the Carpenter version.
There’s been worse, but most of it was a big load of missed opportunities. There was almost zero tension, and the paranoia, who’s who aspect (which I find is the biggest point of the concept in the original) was rushed through and barely registered at all. Most of it ended up being a big-monster-on-the-loose film, that is to say a very standard plot. And that’s not what The Thing is supposed to be IMO.
I agree with Prof X that the black guy should have been used MUCH more, especially since he was played by a cool actor.
The ending pissed me off.
SPOILER
The credit sequence bridging scene was so rushed and unsatisfying it was frustrating. What DID happen to Lars ? All of a sudden, the dog shows up and he knows that it’s an imitation ? The guy that kills himself : no build-up to it, we don’t see it, don’t see the guy losing it and exactly how/why. Such a missed opportunity.
I could go on but even though I had no expectations I thought it was an unnecessary film. As far as I’m concerned, it doesn’t deserve to be a hit; it was a lazy effort, unfortunately.
I only see it as “necessary” if they plan to go forward and make more movies. Yeah, it helped the mythology to show how this thing truly acts and that there are several of them. They never even found the one that crashed with the helicopter.
I don’t see it as pointless…but yeah, there were HUGE GIGANTIC opportunities to cash in on more tense drama that they just skipped over. It needed to be more than 2 hours…but the truth is, most people have short attention spans…and even the first movie didn’t cash in at the box office. It was ignored until it became a cult hit later on.
You have to give it some credit just for reviving what was a masterpiece and possibly taking it forward.
I would LOVE for Kurt Russel to do some sort of cameo. If they can make the guy in Tron look younger, they can do the same with him.
Saw this over the weekend. Agree with most of the pros mentioned so far, and a few of the cons. It felt a little rushed in terms of connecting with the characters and caring about who they were. But the tension was definitely there and The Thing-style of paranoia, not knowing who’s really who and keeping track of who was alone at what time, was great.
I really got a kick out of seeing how they tied some of the events into the next film. The axe in the wall, the two-faced alien outside (great scene), the throat slit guy (but I do wish that was given some more attention), and of course the very, very end. Reminded me of the original Halloween 1 and 2, more John Carpenter awesomeness. ![]()
I have no idea how The Thing’s opening weekend lost to the Footloose remake.

Regarding the dude who got cooked at the end, I think it would’ve been better if they left it more up in the air. Was he, wasn’t he? If he didn’t double-check the wrong ear, it would’ve been more up for debate. Though, if he was, wouldn’t he have tentacled out while on fire? There were some funky squeals while he was roasting, but I don’t think that’s definitive.
Also, we need to discuss the lady. According to my girlfriend, she drives to the Russian camp whether she’s infected or not (loose end for sequel!). If it were up to me, she sits still and freezes to death on purpose a’la the guys in the original. She was definitely sitting there trying to figure something out in her head, and the alien did grab her leg in the ship, plus she was in the same Snow Cat that the alien drove to the ship, so there’s a good chance of infection.

I thought it was interesting what they did with the girl. I was sure she had to be killed off at the end but her surviving with the knowledge of the existance of a third base is perfect fodder for a sequel.
AND it could mean that, her reaching the russian base, informing them of what went down, could lead to a sequel in which they actually reach the two survivors (MacReady and Childs) from the very first film…
Interesting possibility there. But they should get another director. Make it a HORROR film, like Carpenter’s.

I agree…and why would he help her so much if he was a “thing” I think she killed him for nothing personally and I think the dog got away!
