/b/ is the anus of the internet. Almost all bad things on the internet originated there in some way.
Stay off of there and out of the skat porn chat rooms and you should be fine.

The internet is not a “scary” place. The world is a “scary” place, and the internet brings that to light.

Not to mention kids desensitizing themselves to gore and guns and stuff to the point where they don’t think it’s wrong anymore. [/quote]
kids looking at violent, traumatic actual incidents that happened to real people and joking about it casually. That’s disturbing, but i’m never sure whether its bravado or naivete (i.e. same person can’t be so cold 5 yrs later when they grow up some) or whether that becuase it’s on a streaming vid or jpg they somehow don’t see it as ‘real’ real.
If it happened infront of them i’d have to think they would react with the same horror as anyone else, i’d hope so anyway.
That’s the thing about the internet, it isn’t just a vast library anymore, now it’s like an observatory whereby you can ‘beam’ into many places and times and observe things whether you’re an adult or an impressionable kid.
10 years ago i understood the gap that allowed kids to be more in advance of their parents in internet usage, but now switching on a systems basic parental conrols really shouldnt be seen as complicated anymore (saying that, i see lots of kids with ipods, don’t know about surfing/content controls on that!)
I agree with the comment that people tend to go where they are interested. The sites that generate the vast majority of activity among the young is the endless banality of youtube, msn, facebook and various popular/mainstream things

Woa Woa Woa, Is this thread serious? The Internet is scary? Dood, go read a few history books. The time before modern civilization was fucking scary. I mean you realize that basically all humans did before modern sociaty was formed was war on eachother? I mean like swords and spears and raping and pillaging.
You are just out minding your business in your field and a band of barbarians rides over the hill on horseback. You have a sword and a 15 year old son. They have 20 men. You have a wife and 3 daugthers. You and your son are going to get skewered, the females will be raped over and over while the band of men consume the liquid resources of your farmstead. Then they May kill the women also, or they may take them and sell them later. You can’t call the police, you can’t do shit. Unless you are some fucking wizard with a sword, your world is going to end violently.
The internet is childsplay, literally, compared to what humanity used to be like.

Uhh, you both stole that “whoa whoa whoa” from ME!
Proof is in the pudding!
whoa whoa whoa…Where are the tits?
I was under the impression that there’d be wall to wall White women here.
Personally I think that one of the ways the internet is damaging is because it takes up time that could otherwise be used more productively.

I don’t know man, I’ve learned a lot of shit while surfin the web … like how to cook crack and who the president of Iran is and who it should’ve been had it not been rigged and exactly how crazy Kim Jong Il actually is (slightly crazier than Charles Manson)
