I am even more convinced now that Trump will sleaze his way out of this one (as he has often done in his Life). The “Counter-Campaign” (IMO); both by the GOP and Conservatives; is proving to be almost “Putin-esque” in it’s ferocity, focus and consistency.
Another disappointing person to me has been AG Barr.
He always has appeared to be a “straight-shooter”, who now has just become a shill for Trump. He lately has looked and sounded like a man who is saying “F*ck it…let me get through this and give me my benefits…”
Even Jeff Sessions had a moment of doing the right thing…even though it cost him his job and has incurred the Eternal Wrath of Trump.
The Republicans are thinking short term survival. They know that long term, they are dinosaurs. If you look at the issues they latched onto like gay marriage and abortion, they are not in tune with America. Even gun control. Healthcare. Legalized drugs. Climate change. American society has left them behind. If they had remained more true to actual conservative values, maybe it would be different. And now they have the alt-right and its incel angst, racism and antisemiticism to think about.
I, for one, look forward the Trump administration’s investigation into Perry because of what appears to be rank corruption on its face, because, you know, Trump is a principled opponent of corruption and would never go after a political opponent on it and ignore it in his own administration.
My guess is that his POST-presidency will probably be more interesting than his Presidency; especially has he attempts to keep the focus and limelight on himself (like he has done his whole Life).
Think he will initiate some World-Wide Humanitarian Initiative with President Obama?

I never felt this was what was being referred to. I always felt that the Deep State was a conspiracy driven idea. Career government officials are, in some sense, one of the most important aspects of a functioning government–you WANT people who are there before and after politicians, so that the whims of administrative change can be calmed in some way and continuity maintained in some sense.
Ages ago Britain created one of the great civil services in the world, and perhaps the first truly more-or-less politically independent bureaucracy. It enabled the governance of a worldwide empire before all the fancy technology we have to communicate.
“Deep State” was never meant as some benign description of Governmental bureaucracy. It is meant to designate a hidden Government out to subvert the Constitution, subvert policy and take away our rights. (@loppar…I was fascinated to learn that it was actually used to describe the Turkish Government back in the 90’s).
The questions I have are this: (and it’s serious; I can’t seem to find an answer):
How did it somehow become a “liberal” entity out to only destroy Conservatives, particularly Trump?
How in the world are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of individuals able to manipulate and subvert the legitimate mechanisms of Government; and coordinate those efforts; and still be covert?
It seems to make for great theater on FOX news; but ultimately the concept makes no sense to me.
Why bother with an elected set of representatives if we have a set bureaucracy to make the country run?
In fact, wouldn’t this process of governance be better run by the sort of algorithm that AI is based on? No need for any human interface - just programmed chess moves to counter chess moves.
OT - curious as to if an actual impeachment vote will occur. The seige proccess seems to be the goal, rather than actually removing from office. These fanciful dreams of Pence being taken down also, then Pelosi being made president - hehe.
The people trying to sell a whole deep state idea are not trying to convince anyone with a brain capable of independent critical thinking. They are trying to reach those who are uneducated and simple minded enough to believe an illogical fairy tale. That’s why their theories are so outlandish. Then you add in some racism or antisemiticism and you connect with those who are even more easily duped.
It’s like those late night infomercials that promise to make you a millionaire. They are marketing towards those who are too naive or just plain too dumb to understand that if it sounds too good to be true…
The real term to describe what probably does exist is gray eminence, eminence grise. But most Americans don’t learn about much of anything.
Agreed. That being said, I could see them forcing a vote like 2 weeks before election day to force the GOP to go on record absolving Trump of wrongdoing.
