I watched a show lastnight that had guys fishing for these monsters. I never heard of a Alligator Gar before. What a beast! I’ve heard the expression " everythings big in Texas" but this is crazy.
This show was called monsterquest and they went all around the world looking for monster fresh water fish. In the ninties someone in Minnasota found the jaw bone of a muskie and gave it to the fish and game people and they gave it to a taxidermist to figure out how big it was…six feet long! They guy also said it would have probably beat the existing record easy.
My fishing buddie bought another boat so now I can use his old one by myself and try out the fly rod my dad gave me again. I’ll have all the room I need now without getting hung up on bushes from shore like I used to. Fly fishing is more work but if I ever manage to hook into one of the 4-5 pound bass in this pond It will be worth it.

Yep, pretty common just 45 minutes from my house. Big monster fish for sure. Used to bow-fish for them in the shallower areas. Water was so muddy you had to wait for them to surface and then guess where they were as they quickly went under. Pulling in a 30-40 lb or bigger hand over fist is entertaining for sure.[/quote]
I am soooo jealous lol. The only thing here in Ontario that’s close to that gar in size is sturgeon.
OK, Murdich Minnow-- YES, I’ve used that streamer before.
Let me be real honest here-- I’m a real suck-ass ‘finesse’ fly fisherman so I use heavy-weight streamers almost exclusively. LOL! When I don’t use heavy weight streamers, I use light-weight streamers
I fail at dry fly except when I catch bass on them, but, frankly, I could use a piece of floating shit and catch bass…
Haha! I can relate to that. I’m of the chuck and duck school of streamer fishing (emphasis on duck!). I save the finesse for little creeks.
To get that to work in the fast and tumbly water where I was using it required split shot to slow it down and sink it a little. The river bed is mostly submerged large rock fields which create big stretches of small rapids and eddies.
The nice thing about that is when something catches a fishes eye, it strikes fast and hard.
Going to head out again this weekend and try it again in a couple of other areas. I’m hoping it isn’t severe, but we’re expecting scattered showers.
Went downrigger fishing on friday with some friends and caught some decent pickeral and three rainbows. The biggest pickeral was 8.5 lbs. Fucking sheephead were a huge pain in the ass as usual. Purple was the hot color of the day, tomorrow, who knows lol.
My buddie who owns the boat goes to some website that tracks lake water tempatures, then goes to those warmer area’s and starts. Our boat definitly had the best day out there cause we hear all the chatter on the cb radio. No one else had eight in the cooler. Great day, great company.
I learned a new way to remove the backbone from a fillet. Take a fillet like you see here and make two cuts lenghtwise along the spine about 1.5 inches long(start at the tail) Next just pull it apart in half. Then take the fillet with the backbone still in it and pull out the spine, voila! two perfect pieces of fish. It’s called pulling the zipper.
The reason I mention it is because there are people here that are from all over and I’m curious to see how they do things and what they call it.
My contribution. Part of a five fish 20.67 pound tournament limit I caught flipping shallow cover with a jig. Biggest was just shy of 6 pounds. Was a great day on the water!
^ Never been out west but if I win the lotto I’m going to be all over those monster Salmon like the one you’re holding, Chinook or coho?
I downrigger fish in the summer on the great lakes and do well but I much prefer river fishing.
I missed the run by two fuckin’ days. That pic I posted was with the clear water, they were slammin em’ in the dirty water before I got there…oh well, got drunk, stayed dry, had a good laugh or two and ate like kings.
Oh fightinIrish, I’ve had some clients from New Jersey and were all just a blast.
I remember one group of 3 young guys (late 20’s early 30’s) wow we fished for days together, never laughed so hard. Money guys but so fucking funny, still have stories from them.
And another sweet old guys just retired from being warden at your prisons over there, so interesting.
Yes fishing is like lifting, like sports, don’t matter, just do it,have fun, meet people!
