The Doctrine of the Wife

You know pookie, perhaps my post was all wrong. In todays day and age of political correctness, womens liberation etc… These words sound harsh and have a conitation of someone having to be slave or something.

I think your post was perfectly ok, and that the Bible is wrong. It reflects the times it was written in. We don’t see the Bible the same way, so I don’t think that my view of it is available to you.

But in the end it onle tells the husband to love his wife and vice versa.

Really? It think that’s what you’d like them to say, but they don’t. Why else would JPbear mention, about those verses, that she must accept them even if she doesn’t like them?

What’s not to like about “the husband must love his wife and vice versa?” But that’s not what the verses say; while they tell the husband to love his wife, they tell the wife to submit to her husband in all things and to keep silent. That “vice versa” is pretty lopsided.

Well, it sure may seem lopsided based on the word count, but on the flip side it does not tell the wife to give her life for her husband.
I see where you’re coming from though and i would not try to convince you otherwise. If you feel that those texts are offensive, then by God they’re offensive… To you. And that’s all that counts in the end. How you feel about them.

I have problems with many things in the bible as well. Like why did the God of the old testament kill poeple that misbehaved. Why kill and level entire cities? Why commit mass genocide with huge floods? Why? Surely actions like those do not seem very God like. I say this and i’m a Catholic. So i do see the problems.

The way i look at it is, I only follow what Jesus did and said. I base my life on Foregiveness. I forgive everyone that has wronged me. I forgive my Extremly physically and emotionally abusive father for his sins. I will not curse him, as his curse is his life. I wish him well and plenty of peace. This has ultimately made my life better, it really has. My anger is gone and my heart ready to love.
Forgiveness is THE lesson to be learned from Jesus. And it’s a good one.

With patient observing i noticed that life has a funny way of dealing with people that screw you. They ALL get what’s coming to them. So i forgive and move on.

Pookie,

How many times, and in how many ways has this been explained to you?

There are different types of laws in the Old Testament.
Yes, that’s nice. Unfortunately, everything I quoted is from the New Testament. You’ll find it somewhere between the 4 Gospels and Revelation.

It’s just one book and you haven’t read it all? Tsk, tsk.

Less arguing, more submission and silence please.

1)You mockingly quote some New Testament Bible verses
2)I respond by saying those verses need to be followed
3)You mockingly quote an Old Testament verse
4)I respond by saying that that type of law is no longer in effect

Clear now?

Thankfully, no one is required to submit to you.
Yup. Forgot about the Exodus one. You should use the little “quote” button when replying; it would make clear which previous post you were addressing.

Not that it really matters…

Thankfully is right. I prefer a relationship where both partners are equals.

I understand where you and Gregor are coming from. There is a balance to this that often gets overlooked, especially when these scriptures are criticized my non-Christians but also by some who would use it as an excuse to mistreat women. According to the Chris-like model of marraige, the husband must be a servant to God, and in doing so, must be a servant to his family. The ideas here are based on leading-by-example, love, nurturing, support and family solidarity. It’s good to hear you stick to your guns on this.

Take care
