Perhaps the biggest issue we are facing now. What is your opinion? Above are two articles from the economist.

Why the fuck don’t they stop spending money that a) they don’t have and b) even worse on dumb shit like all of these bullshit wars?
Because these “bullshit” wars give us some control over things like oil and the petro dollar. Google it.
They give you the illusion of control for a very high price.
There is no illusion, but the control does come at a high price.

Strange that we would price it so high when we have control.

More like it’s a shame control doesn’t come free. This isn’t like a video game where you just click buttons and shit winds up the way you want it.
It’s safe to say a parent has control over his or her child, but establishing and maintaining that control requires energy and sacrifice.

Do you have any idea how expensive oil would have to become in order to make it even financially feasible to exert “control” over the Middle East?
A few trillion buys quite a lot of it.
And that is if you do not factor in that the interventions in Iraq, Yemen or Libya drive the price of oil upward.

I don’t need to Google bullshit when I see it…
It really is an incredibly strange comment, and completely derailed the thread.
Anyone else watch Obama and Boehner giving their speeches tonight? I think the administration has done well to largely remove tax hikes and focus on closing loopholes and issues with deductions. They seem to be reaching across the aisle for a bipartisan approach, and I believe Boehner would like to do the same but there are many loud, purely policial voices commanding his hand.
“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem.”

Truly insightful commentary there.
If that’s all you’ve got to contribute it’s not much.
Wait just a minute! You are saying we should lower our actual debt and not a potential number?
Absolutely. Is quite possible to pay off the interest and begin to pay off some of the debt not merely cap the ceiling in my opinion. Massive cuts and smarter treasury investment are the way forward.
Define ‘intellectually’…define ‘inferior’…
No one right now. You’re struggling to even pay off the interest.
The reduction in debt alone would increase the credit rating. I don’t see what raising the ceiling would have to do with anything if you’re paying off the interest and the debt at a rate that improves investor confidence enough to raise your credit rating.

My reply was sarcastic. I am agreeing with you on all counts.

What they need to do is cut spending, no tax hikes and close the tax loopholes. Liberal biased companies like GE take advantage of the tax loopholes too, but you only hear about big oil and the “rich.” Obama doesnt know how to lead in this area, he just wants a pass. He doesnt know how to fix the economy period.

Sounds like exactly what the White House is proposing.
From the article posted in the OP:
And the closer you look, the more unprincipled the Republicans look. Earlier this year House Republicans produced a report noting that an 85%-15% split between spending cuts and tax rises was the average for successful fiscal consolidations, according to historical evidence. The White House is offering an 83%-17% split (hardly a huge distance) and a promise that none of the revenue increase will come from higher marginal rates, only from eliminating loopholes. If the Republicans were real tax reformers, they would seize this offer.
No Method man a strong military makes us a superpower, how about we cut back on welfare to those who do not need it. There are plenty of people legal and illegal who abuse this. Work 6 months then take six months off with unemployment. Yes it happens I know some.
Your an idiot if as you fail to see the concept of a strong military. If we are not the superpower than other countries are more than willing to step up.
How about we stop funding crap like arts, museums, planned parenthood, subways in areas of the country where they cannot possibly work.
It is funny how when Obummer was a senator he was strongly opposed to debt limit raise when Bush was in office. He is a pathetic POS. I find it hard to believe he is really that dumb?
