The Best Bands

Bastard. The time I leave Iowa, and they play two shows there.

I caught them in 2004 on the tour for St. Anger. Good stuff, they put on a good show.

some of the best metal comes from europe and scandinavia.
e.g. Behemoth - Poland, Children of Bodom - Finland
none of which can even come close to Lamb of God (from my home town of Richmond VA right here in the states!)
?! I wouldn’t exactly call Behemoth or COB the best bands from Europe (or Scandinavia for that matter). And how do you rate them as being the best? I feel that Lamb of God are a bit overrated and were lucky enough to fill a void when Pantera fell apart. And why change their name from Burn the Priest?

You know what’s funny? I’ve played in a lot of bands and a lot of genres over the years. At gigs (rock, country, mix, oldies, classic, etc), the 2 bands songs that consistently and reliably always get the best reactions have been:

Lynyrd Skynyrd and CCR

I can’t explain it-- something about those 2 band’s songs.

Sad thing is, CCR never got a number one hit.
And if they came out today they would be country.

Yeah. Everything old is new again if you play the music long enough.

What would you recommend then?
I’m always open to new suggestions.

and I understand why you might think Lamb of God is overrated if you only listen to the most played songs.
but everyone has different opinions.

back to the OP, no single country can claim the title for having a genre completely locked down.

Gotta agree here with Lohryx5 here, IMO my favorite comes out of Europe, but they are definitely not widely known, but some of my fav. bands are definitely Progressive/Power Metal and some Death Metal (most obvious being Dream Theater out of the US, but Pagan’s Mind, Circus Maximus, Nightwish, Pathosray, Amorphis, Marco Sfogli’s solo album, Kamelot(out of the US but the singer Khan from Norway), Porcupine Tree, Seventh Wonder, Symphony X, Susperia, Soul Source…)

PM me with a full list if you get the chance, it would be much appreciated.

Miroku333 - You’re right, it is only my opinion…if you like 'em, great! I can’t deny that they’ve done a lot in terms of bringing new fans into metal. By that can be attributed to a lot of what I consider the “Hot Topic” bands. Even Behemoth has done much better since they earlier days when they were a black metal band.

I’ve always leaned towards the heavier, more extreme end of the music spectrum…and what I consider the best will be widely different from everyone else’s views. For me, Mayhem, Emperor, Darkthrone, etc. will always hold the crown in the (Scandinavian) Black Metal realm. Even though the US now has some incredible bands, especially out west…Leviathan/Lurker of Chalice top that for me.

Europe has just always been ahead of the States in terms of metal, regardless of genre. England had Sabbath, Priest, Maiden…we couldn’t really match them…at least not for a long while. Sure, we had some great thrash bands, but that eventually started to fizzle out with the arrival of death metal. Napalm Death set the new bar for extreme music, and bands like Dismember, Entombed, Carcass…they all come on like a great flood. We answered back with a bunch of FL bands like Obituary, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse…but most of them were considered “cheesy” even by metal mags of the time. At least here in the states. So we’ve been chase Europe ever since…and they’ve always been one step ahead of us.

I like lots of Eurpoean Bands, but after the Beatles, Stones and Zep it is USA all the way:

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Springsteen and the E Street Band
Bob Seger
Van Halen
Pearl Jam
Metallica
Georgia Satellites
REM
Black Label Society
Motley
Hendrix
Dylan
etc.

Ramones

Tool??

first band that comes to mind is Chevelle.

Yeah Tool best band ever.
Isis
RATM

oLD SCHOOL SHIT
The Doors
CCR

The British bands of that era are some of the best, and definitely the most influential. I suggest to those who are interested in “classic” rock, go read hammer of the gods. It’s mind blowing how the music of that era shaped the world. Point blank, if those bands hadn’t made it there would be no more rock’n’roll.

Exactly what i was going to say. They helped start the punk movement and have some very memorable songs.

a few of my favorites new and old that deserve a listen.
from the Americas:

U.S. - Little Feet(with Lowell George), Nile, Disturbed, Mastodon, The County Medical Examiners(real Dr’s), Frank Zappa, Betty Blowtorch, GWAR, Iced Earth, Megadeth, Black Oak Arkansas, Overkill, Cannible Corpse, Primus, Slayer, Trivium, Between the Buried and Me, Metal Church, Testament, Shadows Fall, Anthrax, Death, Monstrosity, Black Label Society, Pantera + Corrosion of Conformity + Crowbar = Down

from the north - Annihilator, Quo Vadis, Gates of Winter, Voivod, Into Eternity, Razor(side project Bobnoxious), 3 Inches of Blood, Strapping Young Lad, Goreguts, Eidolon, Kataklysm, Devon Townsend

from the south - Sepultura, Torture Squad, Cavalera Conspiracy, Soulfly, Tormentor

and my favorite from France: ETHS

The best bands of today? There is no telling. So many influences from bands of yesteryear, and even they took their sound from somebody else. What I notice is, nobody looks forward, they all look back. Even when there is a band to notice now, nobody knows or cares, all they want is fucking stairway to heaven. Or Steve fucking Miller. Or some semblance of all metal combined.

They have ears for only yesterday. Wouldn’t know something good if it came up and bit them on the fucking ass. Sittin there complaining there is no good music . … asking to play Styx and Journey for the 44th time, while good NEW talent dies in the background. Hey, I am the carrier of the torch of new music, and of the old music that was forgotten and so godamn good. Credence is no secret, neither are the Eagles…and Metallica is just a fucking sad case now, I dont care what you bitches think. I’m not impressed. I’m not.

Music is getting to be like everything else in this world, tainted and fake. Lindsay Lohaned. Miley Cyrused. What a bunch of CUNTS. Have you people not ears? Have you not hearts? I don’t care who you’d fuck out of them. Music used to mean something assholes, it used to separate the dead from the living. To me, you are all dead. Read poetry, read period. Just READ. Stop being so fucking stupid. Turn off the flavor of Love, turn it OFF. They are stupid individuals, they know NOTHING. They gave nothing to this world and all it is. Hear me NOW. Your body means nothing, it never will… it will wither and die, and the worship will end there. Nurture your strength, inside. Look to the ones that can reach you inside. Your intelligence if you can muster it, is your ticket beyond.

What does every band/pop star/rock icon that everyone has mentioned have in common?

Every single one of them makes music based around the same harmonic structure. 3 chord harmony or a 1 chord vamp used as a harmonic climate.

My vote will have to go to Frank Zappa. He is the anomoly of a system designed to pump out more of the same thing based on what sells people to buy records and watch videos. Through his career of satire, rock paraody, rock music, and serious compositions the man has proven decade after decade that it is still possible to go completely against the grain and make something unique and original that has a voice in pop culture.

Frank was not a consumer of popular music. The guy just understood music so well that he could literally write genuine sounding tunes in any style he desired. Combine that with his awareness of social patterns and tendencies of pop culture and you get one funny mother fucker.
