Rather than derail the RI thread I thought I’d start my own.
The subject of teachers’ unions hides the real argument because unions in and of themselves are not immoral. They become so when they become powerful enough to influence government. The real problem is and always will be the government which grants them special favors which ends up diminishing the supply/raising prices of workers in that industry – teaching, for example.
Besides, many children would be better suited to learning a trade and not being stuffed into government drone centers in the first place.
Most children are not suited to sitting in a class room and would be better off learning the basics in some other fashion…I am hoping the internet will start to fill the gap in this regard.
Education cannot be treated as a right. It is a good like any other and the more government interferes in it the more its quality becomes diminished. In fact, we can blame unions for compulsory and free education in America and this is the discussion we should be having. Children are being robbed of their full potential just so some idiot that could not get a real job can get paid to babysit them.
Rather than unions, parents should be allowed to decide which if any of their children should pursue academic life and give the rest freedom to pursue their own educational interests. Those children instantly will become more valuable to their families and ultimately their community.
