Initially when I was debating this subject with some co workers, I was arguing that its no big deal, and a total windfall for some lucky kid. One of my co-workers told me about his cousin whos dad took him to a brothel in Mexico and bought him two women for his 14th birthday. By the time he was 19 he had 4 kids, and had been infected with just about every STD out there. According to my co-worker, it really screwed up his cousins altitudes about sex and women.
I think that the negative effects with boys are much more subtle than with girls. Plus not all the teachers are hot, only the ones in the news.

So let me get this straight: this kid has a threesome with Mexican hookers on his dad’s dime before he can legally drive a car and that’s somehow a BAD thing? Sounds like quality father-son time to me.
I don’t know. Paying for hookers for your son may be a bit creepy, but I could see that being a great bonding tool in some families. Talking about the local hotties, discussing your favorite porn, making lewd remarks about hotties and fatties on the TV and when you are driving, not THAT is father-son bonding material. When I was young, this was to be looked forward to. Especially spotting the hotties.

I’ve got a hypothetical question on this topic, but first let me set the scene:
I’m a teacher, male, 24, and this is my first year. Shugart’s reply in the other thread really hit home-- it’s a pretty regular occurrence that some hot 16-18 year old girl will make a blatant pass at me, and while I would never compromise my job, it’s a distraction.
A few weeks ago, a very cute student walks into my classroom and says, “Guess what, Mr. ****, I’m 18 now!” and gives me a little smile. Later that day in class they were working in groups and she comes up to me and says quietly, “Mr. ****, we should go out, don’t you think?”
A shameless flirt, no doubt about it. And the challenge is to shut it down w/out giving her too much attention, which I think I did.
So here’s the question. I’m a normal guy, had good relationships, currently single. Mostly been in relationships with girls a few years older than me.
But if I run into this girl over the summer (in other words, when she is both over the age of consent and no longer a student at my school), does it make me a perv if I try and get some tail?

It doesn’t make you a perv at all, but even the fact that you are asking tells you that it would probably make a lot of people SEE you as a perve.
Look around the teacher’s lounge and think about those fat middle aged ladies knowing you banged that girl. Think about shaking hands with the father of another good looking girl who just turned 18 and seeing the distrust in his eyes because he knows you like 'em young. Imagine what it would do to your credibility if you are ever falsely accused of something by another student–maybe one who is mad because you don’t give her the attention you gave the other girl.

I think the earliest you could jump on her and not look like a total perve would be over Xmas break when she comes back from college.

Do you guys descriminate between sexual acts in the law?

Its not necessarily this situation but the type of other abuse it allows in the future. The ONLY way to protect other children is to draw the line so all minors are off limits.

Which one of you has provided evidence that girls are harmed by early sexual encounters while guys are not? You’re clearly drawing on your own memories, but who’s to say whether you would have actually enjoyed it at that age? There’s a huge gap between fantasy and the reality of a thing.
Finally to the guy who’s teaching. This is a bad idea. If you are found out, it will correctly be assumed that you are planning on getting with them while they are still your students, and even if you don’t lose your job it’s going to make you look very, very bad. I’d say it’s not worth the potential shit storm you could face.

One of my female friends in school married one of our teachers ( about a 5 year age difference). They have now been married for almost 15 years and have 4 kids. They never dated while she was a student, but started not long after we got out of school. Seemed a bit weird at the time, but they have now been together so long that it seems normal.
