Tall Guy Squats

Here it is, bench may be hard for a tall guy to put up more weight but what im having severe issues with is my squat. i can not find the right groove. I squat wide(ish) for raw, 6’ 5’’ and wear flat shoes.

I seem to fall over and when i get towards the hole my low back feels stretched to much and i cant get lower. suggestions? i can try to get a video up tonight with some lighter weight as i did squat last night.

Are you falling backward or forward?

here i am with 95ls, i train for powerlifting mods moved this to bb… any help is greatly appreciated

foward, tried to uload a video but my comp is being a dick right now

wow sorry for how dark that is didnt realize it, ill try to get another

Put a piece of wood beneath your heels and lean back more.

hope this is better

Are you doing your stretching/foam rolling/glute activation/mobility work?

i stretch everything 3x a week, use a baseball to roll glutes, hips, back shoulders anything thats bothering me. i do glute ativation before squat days and i do limited mobility work, what would be reccommended for mobility work?

would this advice change for squat widths?

i am 6’5’’ too. i quit back squats, all i do is front squats A2G. I can’t use that much weight 225x3 or 185x8, but my knees feel good and i am getting a lot stronger

yeh i front squat and despite the lack of weight they feel so much more natural, i just ordered oly shoes see if they help, if not i may end up soley doing above parralell box squats and front squats, i have to have strong legs though for shot put thats why im so concerned. i also have th elong legs short torso build :frowning:

thanks for the help guys will get back to you next week when i try the new shoes

Try about a shoulder width stance with your feet. Turn the shoes slightly outward: \ /

Also buy a pair of lifting shoes with an elevated sole. Do Win’s for instance.

You are very tall man. Stick to it for a few years, and you are going to become a monster!

+1 on a narrower stance. arch your back real hard to keep your chest out and blow your belly out. on the way up “throttle back” on the bar and thrust your hips forward, similar to a deadlift.

I’m not quite that tall but i prefer front squats atg also. get comfortable with those and i feel it much better in my quads than the rear squat. i still rear squat occasionally using a 2x4 under my heels.

thanks for all the help, i orded oly shoes last night they will be here for my next session, matsm i will try the narrower stance i appreciate it.

I couldn’t really tell too well form the video but it looks like your sacrum is tucking under towards the bottom (aka the butt tuck). This is usually caused by tight hamstrings. I would look into lengthening out your hammies.

… another trick for us tall folks is to rest the bar a bit further down your back, instead of on your shoulders. I’m 6’6", so I feel your pain

I’m 6’6" and can’t squat worth anything, I just started seriously training about 2 months ago, and I’ve been doing Front Squats and dead lifts on separate days of the week, spread at least 4 days apart. I do 3 sets for my exercises with fewer reps on FS because I’m always out of breath and sweating if I do a lot more. I do 80x8, 90x8, 100x7 (on other exercises I go for sets with reps of 12,10,8)

I’m very interested to see how much the shoes help! I’m going to try out the other tips too.
