T-Accountants Unite

Guys, I got some awesome news.

I managed to nail my first accounting job with a multinational manufacturing company. Starting June 1st as a graduate accountant.

I can’t even put into words how awesome this is!

Hey all-

Just thought I’d resurrect an old thread and add myself to the T-Nation accounting role. Just graduated in December and start my first accounting job next Monday.

I started studying for the MD CPA exam, any tips for those that have passed? I’m using the Gleim review system.

Any sponsored project accountant out there? Enjoy tax season I know my wife is!

-Chris

Working busy season and studying for the exam is going to be brootal. Three accountants are doing this at my firm right now. I took the exam after college using the Becker review, I wasn’t working so all I was doing was studying. Don’t know anything about Gleim - but all I hear are rave reviews about Roger CPA review. I don’t know how I can be of any help - but I used to listen to Mozart piano concertos while I was studying. I think it helped a little bit. And I didn’t drink at all for the whole 6 months. And don’t underestimate the power of flash cards.

FUCK. I’m SOOOOOOO fucking glad I passed before I started working. I’m just glad I passed. The CPA stands for Can’t Pass Again.

My firm is pretty cool about busy season. I’ve been there only 3 months. We are only required to work 55 hours a week, and we get paid overtime. I’m not doing any taxes yet, I’m still doing GL book keeping crap which I hate. At least I don’t have to do any financials for my first year there. My firm’s clients are all dairy farms that use cash basis accounting, so my learning curve has been pretty steep.

I know countingbeans was raging hard on some entry level accountant that couldn’t get a simple bank rec right. I would just like to say that not all bank recs are neat and clean. Some of them get particularly nasty. I spent all fucking day Friday working through this hellish bank rec, coding checks, sifting through payroll reports trying to find $571.46. I still haven’t reconciled that bank account.

Tax season isn’t looking that bad at all, my last firm we were required to work 70 hours a week with no overtime. I’m certainly not hating life right now because it could be a hell of a lot worse.

Good luck, just get the damn exam over with - it feels so awesome when you do.

So many accountants… Didn’t see this thread before.

I graduated with a Masters in Accounting two years ago (after doing B.Business E-commerce) and work in a small accounting firm. Put my CPA on hold though, as I pretty much hate being an accountant and wish to pursue my dream job in graphic design and illustration.

Lol… Maybe I shouldn’t be posting in there.

Accounting 201 was more difficult for me than any chemistry of calc course I took, it was the only time I got a D in a class. Did not compute.

Congrats on being rich mofos now!

I am using GLEIM as well. I put this off long enough and its time to get this done. I take two parts in April. Happy studying.

Good luck to you as well. Let me know what you think of Gleim after you’ve taken a section.

I was hoping to take AUD this month, but the MD board of accountancy is taking forever to approve my application. You’d think it would take them like 5 minutes, but whatever. I guess I’ll bump AUD to April and probably FAR to May.

What section are you taking first?

Meh, it’s really just about taking a few courses until you understand the patterns and what to look for. I did poorly in my very first financial accounting course in freshmen year.

I used Becker, it’s okay but not worth $3000, especially since it expires 18 months after you install it. Of course I took a shit load of accounting courses before sitting the exam so I already had a decent foundation in the concepts minus auditing.

That’s funny. It must be a right vs left brain thing. I cannot for the life of me understand like biology for example. Hated bio 201 ended up taking bio115 and still go a b- I believe.

Best advice I can give is don’t skimp on the small topics. I made the mistake of putting most of my focus on large topics and it fucked me. All the small little shit topics get tested quite a bit.

For instance when I wrote REG, I didn’t pay much attention to S Corps because it was a small topic. There were at least 5-7 MC on the topic! I had to rewrite REG unfortunately.

BTW I wrote in Buffalo, NY

T-Accountant here. I am CPA (7yrs) who has been in public practice for the last 12 yrs. I work for a small firm whose bread and butter is tax season. Good luck to those beginning their careers.

Good advice I’ll keep that in mind.

I am taking BEC then AUD, both in April. I will keep you posted how it goes.

Yeah good luck and definitely let us know how it goes. BEC is supposedly the easiest section, I’m curious about the written portion though.

Checking back in, took BEC yesterday, no surprises on the multiple choice, GLEIMs practice exams did a pretty good job of preparing me. There were maybe 2 questions that were from left field, but that was it. The written part was pretty easy as far as I could tell, but then again, I don’t have my results back so I can’t say for sure.

My understanding is that the technical content on the written part is not as important as being able to write. The questions are in the form of memos. Just have to have three points, thesis statement, and conclusion. I do get the feeling the other parts of the exam will be harder than BEC. I got overwhelmed and did not study as much as I should have, but I think I got away with it, not sure I can do that with the rest of the sections. Pretty happy with the GLIEM prep though.

.

BEC is child’s play.

FAR and REG are challenging. AUD is in the middle, though some people find it easy (I didn’t).

A couple tips:

For FAR make sure you know the IFRS rules inside out, they get tested heavily.

for REG make sure you know the 1933 and 1934 SEC acts well. They weren’t covered much in my prep (Becker) but they went into detail on the exam.

It wasn’t just basic stuff, they were asking about Regulation D Rule 505, Circular 230 and a bunch of very specific stuff.

@Therajray - Do you have any AUD tips? I’m taking it on the 22nd of April.

@Kayrob - It’s good to hear you did well. Good luck on the rest of the exam.

Nothing specific like the other two.

AUD I found was worded very trickily, you really have to read extra carefully for this one.
