Our baseball team at my school has the shittiest workout program of all time. They lift five days per week. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday they do bench press and about 30 other chest exercises. They do no back work. Then they do smith machine squats twice a week. No wonder they arent worth a shit. If there were a dead pool for shoulder injuries these fuckers would be at the top of the list. How in the world could somebody be this stupid? As part of my internship for exercise science, I have to revamp all the sports training programs. Please wish me luck.

I’m a member of James Bay Athletic Association as part of the rowing team. We probably got the rugby club in north america but I saw the stuff they do in the gym & it’s awful. They do literally nothing but bench press, there’s a big chart on the wall in the weight room with all the players’ best bench presses on it & it’s supposed to motivate them I guess. What they do is start out with sets of 10 with x% of max & peak over a bunch of weeks. I saw the biggest guy (a ~260lbs lock) do 385 with a huge bounce off his chest. I guess physical strength plays just a small part in rugby.
I enjoy the basketball programs that don’t squat. I watched the women’s basketball team “max out.” They did leg ext. and leg curls till failure. Hopefully Goldberg you won’t have to deal with the baseball players who “know how to lift” and think that since they hit homeruns already lifting a different way won’t help.

Goldie, don’t totally discount the Smith Machine. It has utility and is safe IF used correctly. And, for people who workout alone or at home, it is safer when you go to failure or close to it. Free weights ARE better but safety has to be the first rule observed in weight training. Good luck with your project. I’d be interested in knowing how you change things. Maybe you can put you results on the web so that we can access them.
Avoids Roids, i agree that the smith can be used sometimes in bodybuilding, but its a waste in sports training. They are two very different things as im sure you know.
