South Park Owns Family Guy

I am also a big American Dad fan and I think I might even like it more than Family Guy (which I truly do love).

But in general, there seems to be this new “movement” to deride Family Guy as not being good or (as previously posted) formulaic. To all those doubters I would ask this:

If the show is so “unfunny”, how is it the only show I have ever heard of that was brought back from being canceled after a few years because people were buying the show’s DVDs in droves?

Awesome.

there’s a difference between actually being funny and being over the top…family guy = funny south park= just tries to ruffle feathers by being over the top.
Their over the top humor is what makes South Park, South Park. If you’re going to address an issue do it in grand fashion. I like the fact that they go over the top where so many other shows nowadays are politically correct. Family Guy is stupid humor. We need that also. Its good to have both when you want it. And Family Guy has its over the top moments also!

I have no idea how the two douch bags who write South Park can be considered anything near geniuses…

I’m not saying the people who write Family Guy are geniuses either. I just don’t get anything from people who try to offend for no other reason than, to offend. Makes no sense.

Just because a lot of people like something doesn’t mean it’s good. Everybody Loves Raymond was like the top-rated show in the country for years. I think it’s called the Popularity Fallacy in logic classes.

I think something acts atypical to fad-like popularity when thousands of people write letters in order to bring the show back and people are actually shelling out cash to buy the episodes. I can’t stand Everybody Loves Raymond…but it’s FREE. There is a greater chance of many people watching it simply because no one has to pay for it. The same can’t be said for a show that only came back to television because its DVD sales outdid much of their competition.

I too, own every episode of Family Guy, and a few bootlegged season 5 episodes as well. South Park is like Andrew Dice Clay, and Family Guy is more like, say, Eddie Murphy(BEFORE all the crap, and sucky-ass movies). As someone said, being offensive just to offend is not really funny. I liked many of the old South Parks, but many of the new ones just seem like they are trying too hard to be edgy.

I think if anything showing the Jesus and Bush thing reinforces what a truly free country we are and how christians( at least some of them) do have a sense of humor or at least tolerance enough for people’s freedom to poke fun. Basically it really shows how much of bitches the muslims are that want to riot and bomb things over some cartoons being shown when we can not only clown our leader but a major religious figure as well.
While I do think you make a very good point about the Muslims being a little too over the top, a point can be made is that they are extremely passionate about their religion, and refuse to have their icons made fun of. I do believe that a little tolerance and sense of humor is in order, I believe that many Christians are afraid to stand up for what they claim they believe in. And I believe that it is assinine(sp?) for them to censor an image of muhammad(sp?) looking normal, and then show Jesus deficating uncensored. This really pisses me off, not so much because I am a Christian, but because it goes back to a point made in the very same episodes (Cartoon Wars I and II), Either it’s all okay to show or none of it is. And if they can’t fucking show Muhammed then I don’t want to damn see Jesus portrayed in a negative way.

Again, that’s the point, the double standard and the hypocrisy. They should be saluted for pointing that out.

That’s a terrible comparison. South Park is a much smarter (and more political) show than Family Guy, which goes for easy laughs. The gross-out stuff on South Park is what turns off casual viewers, but there’s way more underneath that.

Also, McFarland is widely considered a hack in Hollywood because of persistent allegations that he steals from other shows and comedians. Some of the allegations, of various merit, are here:

That conclusion is pointless. EVERY comedian claims to have been inspired by other comedians, some even claiming to add specific things from previous acts to their own in some way.

That site is pathetic. Are they actually trying to credit South Park with the creation of the Grim Reaper or Whoopie Goldbeg with the throwing the hotdog down the hallway joke?

All these jokes have been around since I was a kid and probably for years before.

I haven’t seen South Park in a couple of seasons, but I have just started to watch Family Guy and American Dad (also by McFarlane). These are the first couple fo seasons of these that we are getting over here now, and they are some funny, funny shit. American Dad is the most brilliant show of the planet.

That said, Comedy Central have bascially said we will let Muslims dictate what we show on American TV because we are scarred of them. I don’t see how anyone can justify this sort of attitude.

America is a target for many reasons, one of them being that you have an international reputation that says “if the going gets tough, the American public will puss out”. You have proven this again. Good job.

sigh All too true, I am afraid.

At least American Dad is good. I mean, the episode where Haley dates the boss? Brilliant.

Good lord. Every Family Guy joke is a reference to something else. OF COURSE it steals its material. That’s why it’s funny. Watch it with a 12 year old who doesn’t get any of the references. They kind of chuckle, but they don’t actually get any of the jokes.

As I said, of various merit. There’s a difference between making a reference or paying homage to something, and stealing a character (Stuey) outright from someone else’s comic, as appears to have been done.

I like the double episode where Stan and the family move to Saudi Arabia. Pure. Genius.

That Saudi episode was pretty good. I don’t see why everyone kow-tows to the damn Islamic fanatics. THEY can destroy Buddhas, but you had better not make a cartoon about their religion! That’s goin’ too damn far.
As far as Family Guy stealing, there is not really much of anything around today that is truly, totally original. Besides, not every good joke on Family Guy is pop-culture related. And I don’t see how taking a shot at someone constitutes “owning.”
