Simo - The Red Shoe Diaries (Part 2)

Don’t forget the Koestrizer approved technique of pausing at the bottom of the dip to perfect the timing of the push press.

I have been doing this as part of the warm up. They actually feel good and the timing of the leg drive into press feels fine. But when I transition to heavier weight it gets a little sloppy. I’ll get there just got to keep grinding.

All this overhead work is really lighting up my traps and triceps. Nothing like trap doms in the morning

Strongman Saturday - sandbag struggles

Trying out my 250 lbs (114 kg) bag for the first time today. Had it filled to 100KG previously but decided it was time to fill it. Chucked (not literally) it in the scales and it was bang on.

Did numerous pick attempts with the 250 and it was horrible. Could barely get it off the ground with a someways pick as my legs were so wide and long ways the bag is hard to get past my knees. Oh and it is just really heavy. Lower back was trashed after this

Switched to the 80KG (176 lbs) bag and did some bag to shoulder. These felt light after the struggle with the big bag.

Good solid session.

My bag collection weights are 28, 55, 70, 80 and 114kg

Heavy bag causing a little blood bruising on the forearms

Do them on a seperate day with adequate load, mate. The transfer will be limited if you do them as warm ups. In my buildup to my 155 kg btn jerk PR, I did a paused triple at 130 kg. The ratio was similar when I trained for a push press PR before that.

@Koestrizer - Roger that, will find a place to add them

@heretolog It really is miserable, but I will get it soon

@raven78 - been on the road for work mate, which coincided with a deload week and also with me getting a head cold. I will clock a workout later this week and something at the weekend. All good here though

Friday - 6 September full body deload

Deadlift
140 x 5 x 3 sets
These were fine.

Squat.
120 x 5 x 3 sets
Smooth and deep reps. Not hard. Using a power bar after using the axle for a while felt really good.

Bench
90 x 7 x 3 sets
Nice solid reps, good pump.

Oh press
70 x 5 x 3 sets
These moved ok. Still really feel these in the bicep. The front rack stretch is real.

And that is the full body deload done

Strongman Saturday

Sandbag to shoulder with 80kg (176 lbs) bag

About 30 mins of work. Didn’t count reps but was somewhere north of 20. Solid workout.

Had a deload week last week. This coincided with me needing to travel for a couple of days for work and also getting a bit of man flu (minor head cold). I only trained 2 days last week, a full body session on Friday and some sandbag work on Saturday. This was more than enough and being honest it was really hard to get these 2 sessions done.
I am not sure of it is the deload, the cold, or a combination of work and home, but my levels of motivation and energy are at rock bottom right now.

I just don’t have the energy for anything. I don’t really mean physical energy, I still get out of bed early and go to work, and train and do the chores, but mentally I have zero. Zero energy, zero excitement, zero happiness, just zero. This also means I’ve been pretty silent in most peoples logs for a little while, so sorry for that guys.

This doesn’t happen to me very often, actually I am not sure I have ever crashed this hard. Everything is making me grumpy and I am not really the nicest person to be around right now.

I pick up my eldest daughter from school in 2 weeks and then we are all heading off for a holiday. Really hoping that the break will give me some much needed energy, but worried that the biggest problem (me) will still be there.

Not really looking for anything in terms of ideas or fixes but just using this space as a medium to write this down and reflect.

Reads like Simo needs a holiday, alas as a parent we never get a real rest…

Yer that or he just needs to take a spoon of concrete and harden up.

Sorry to read this, I can empathise, I’ve been there, I suspect it’s usually just a manifestation of overload/stress, your body is pretty clever at trying to get you to do what it wants subtly.

I’ve got no sage advice, I found it to be part of the ebb and flow of a busy and meaningful life, it’s not always easy and that takes it’s toll in various ways but just know that it will change eventually.

(And for me the gym motivation has never felt like it returned, I still have no love for it, just keep going and let the discipline carry you).

I have no motivation for deloads or anything really that’s not hard and heavy. In a strange way i love that feeling of pushing and punishing yourself and working dam hard and anything that’s easier i just find boring.

Hope you find your mojo back soon though but don’t be too hard on yourself. You can’t be rocking at 100% all the time, everyone’s allowed an off day or week.

Monday 9 September - week 1

Deficit Axle Deadlift - 2” mat
Bar x 10
60 x 5
100 x 3
Add straps
140 x 3
160 x 6 x 3 sets -
160 x max 8 very angry reps.
Struggling a little to get used to the straps. Ok by the last set . 8 reps was tough, thought lungs would explode.

Viking press sorinex machine
Handles x 10
10 (each side ) x 5
15 x 5
20 x 8 x 4 sets
Started out strict and added a little legs when I needed it. These are proper hard work but it felt good to really challenge the shoulders without having to balance the bqr or dumbells. Big big shoulder pump.

Db supported row
3 sets
30 x 10
SS
Tricep overhead cable extension
3 x 17
7 then 9 plates. Big arm pump.

Pull ups - BW
3 sets 5
Super set
Ab wheel roll outs (from knees)
3 sets of 10
Pull ups were really tough, grip had nothing left (these were on the fat bar). I hate ab wheel rolls they are hard.

Session done, keep moving forward.

I understand this which is why I was doing heavy but low volume deloads. But right now it’s not really the deload that is the problem. I just don’t have the mental energy for anything. I defined it the other day as my social battery being on empty, but I think it’s more like my mental battery is on empty. Physically I can still work, train, wash the car or cut the lawn with no problem. I just move from one task to the next and that gets me through the week ok. I am sure I’ll be right and this will pass.

You are having the same thing that I have every now and then, which I internally think of as my MANstrual cycle. About once a month, I go through this for a handful of days.
