worked out why my deadlift session was so tough last night - I have the lurgy. My misses and the kids have all been sick since the weekend with some sort of cold virus, sore through, stuffy nose etc. I was hoping I could avoid catching it, I have had a bit of a stuffy nose for a few days but was hoping that would be it. Alas no, woke up this morning with a sore throat, stuffy nose and headache. Will do my beast to soldier on and hopefully it wont get any worse.

It’s a rough season this one man.

I’m tip toeing around my house currently…the daughter has been off school with Influenza A this whole week. She is ok…kids always are…maybe two bad days. But us old people…always seem to cop it worse :joy:. I think it’s because we train hard frequently…that’s my theory anyway.

My GP mate said this is the worst year he can remember for patients presenting with flu like symptoms in his last 10 years…

I often find I can get away with mild symptoms if I make sure I eat and drink plenty and just keep working and training. I’ll see how I feel later and maybe i’ll magically come good tomorrow.

Some leg and hip pain but really lungs were the limiting factor here. Training when you are sick is not the best.

100 x 20 - still had lots in the legs but back was getting sore and snotty lungs did not like this.

Not too hard, still good pump. Doing 8 on each leg with no gap between still smashed my lungs. I really need to do more conditioning.

Ok session tonight, the top set for squats wasn’t the best and felt heavy but it’s deload this week and next week I will be relaxing in Bali, so who really cares. The rest was all just pump reps.

This wasn’t really a widow maker in terms of its effort level, just a way to get some pump into the legs in a short amount of time. But I agree that widow makers are good.

Funny thing is that although a high rep set of squats is horrible, at least it is all over in one set. Trying to do 5 heavy sets is far more mentally and physically taxing for me. I am sick though, good call.

One more training session to go this week and then I am flying to Bali on Friday morning for 8 days of winter sun. Can’t wait to be warm again and let this old body recover.

This week some more details have been released regarding the events at the strongman comp I am doing in August. Looks like it will be a fun day out.

Events are:

  1. Squat - This is a max rep squat in 60 secs. The implement is an axle bar with wagon wheels on it, looks cool. The weight for my class is 150KG. There will not be any pads to squat to and depth will be judged each rep. I am not really worried as my squat depth is usually pretty good.
  2. Keg clean and press. There are 3 kegs to clean and press. They revised the weights on these and lowered them which will obviously make it a bit easier. weights are no 55, 60 and 65KG I think for this it will be about speed between the kegs to make sure you get a good time.
  3. Deadlift ladder - 4 implements - Deficit with bar 180KG, Axle 180KG, Low handle Trap bar 190KG, power bar 190KG - single rep on the first 3 and then amrap the last one until the time runs out
  4. Sandbag run. This one is a little different, there will be 2 bags - 80 and 90KG. You will need to pick the first bag up and front carry for 5 meters, then shoulder the bag and wait for down command, then pick it up and front carry another 5 meters and then shoulder the bag again and wait for thee down command. Then run 10 meters back to the start and repeat with the second bag. I think the combination of multiple picks, carries and shoulders is going to make this one pretty tough. Looking forward to this.

Medley - set up a medley that was same as comp in August. 4 bars.

Did 2 rounds of this. It was tough. The trap bar and last bar weights were just under comp weights. Moved fine for a first time and when I am already knackered. Took longer and more work to set this all up, then it did to lift it. LOL
