Problem…female flatmate who trains/eats/sleeps well gets quite sick about 5+ times a year, pisses me off and pisses her off too.
she finally admitted (with a little prodding) that getting sick so often isnt normal and went to see the doctor…as expected the doctor was a pompus arse and told her “its just bad luck”, i think that is a load of bs and the docter is lazy.
what should she go to the doctor and say?
ie “please test my XXXX levels in my blood.”
could a low iron count be the problem?
don’t think low iron could be problem in that arena (anemia, yes). what do you mean by sick? flu, a cold. could be impaired immunity. request cbc with differential and get wbc count. maybe chronically low. also try simple glutamine/whey protein. i eat a ton of cottage cheese, and whey protein and i think i get sick maybe once per year. also, not to scare you, but some underlying disease can cause immunosuppression. if she’s low iron (check crit, hgb in cbc also tibc, serum iron) it may be due to chronic gi bleed that she can’t see.
start with cbc, most docs will do just to check.
Assuming that she gets enough protein, and sleep adding a good multivitamin (e.g. twinlab brand daily two without iron) and 2000 mg vitamin C (ascorbate form) in divided doses has resulted in much less illness in several people who have tried it.
Get her to see a female Doc… I’m sure there are alot of great male doctors out there, but there are also plenty of lazy doctors who don’t keep up with anything more modern than leaching… Stereo typing maybe, but on the whole I prefer female doctors
Tell her to find another doctor, and request a complete blood work-up if possible.Immune function, hormone levels, mineral levels, liver and kidney function etc…Her current doctor sounds like a fool.
Sounds just like me when I was chronically overtraining years ago.
