Shredding After 5x5

I’m only week 3 in Sl 5x5 and its been amazing - the strength gains.
I was wondering after 12 weeks of this program, if I could stick to another strength program where I could incorporate some cardio as well. The reason being I haven’t been losing the fat on the lower belly and waist.

I was thinking if I could use a strength program which allows cardio also without too much fatigue?

Doing cardio in the morning what affect your strength it hasnt affected mine i have done mike o hearns power body building i really enjoyed it and that got 5-6 cardio a sessions a week towards the end. I just changed it around from weight training in the morning to cardio in the morning

The general rule of thumb for fat loss is low impact cardio when you wake up in the morning. Try and eat nothing after dinner so you get the longer benefits of the overnight “fast”. Apply this to whatever time of day you normally sleep. This will not affect strength.

Focus on quality food first or your cardio will be all for naught. Maybe start with just 1-2 low intensity cardio sessions for a couple weeks to get a gauge of recovery.

No need to go to bed hungry for fat loss, and do as little cardio as necessary whenever convenient for you

The “cardio” will not help nearly as much as finding a sensible diet, rich in complete protein, that puts you in a conservative caloric deficit.

Assuming your diet is already on point (which I know it’s not based on many clues in your brief OP, not the least of which is that you are “amazed” by the results 3 weeks of SL), “cardio” should be employed only when necessary per Pwolves comment above.

Also, why are you already capping yourself at 12 weeks? Why already setting LIMITS? for yourself, bro/broette?

after 12 weeks maybe check out wendler’s 5/3/1. It has built in(recommended) hill sprints/prowler/conditioning work. I ran it for a while and used incline treadmill ‘pushes’ for the condition side.

As a 17-year old who’s 5’10" and around 154 pounds, I’d suggest avoiding “shredding” for at least another year or two.

I’m not sure what your particular goal is, but you need to build a foundation of strength and muscle, and that’s going to take much longer than the next 9 weeks.

I’d bet a dollar your daily nutrition needs improvement. Address that first. Eating smart and training hard will take you far. Trying to get abs before you’ve built muscle will seriously only set you back.

You are 5ft 10 and 154lb.

Unless you plan on competing in a sport that has weight classes, you should just continue to eat more.

And eat according to the number at the end of the article. Come back in a year.

You’re right I guess. My protein intake isn’t high as it should be. I don’t rely on supplements also(personal reasons). have a sweet tooth also. crave sugar like a turk for cocaine :stuck_out_tongue:

You can almost certainly get more than three months progress out of a 5x5 routine, especially when/if you get your eating in line. Jumping to a new program prematurely is one of the most common causes for slow progress in beginners. Also, I wouldn’t exactly call Stronglifts “a lot” of volume by any stretch.

What, exactly, did you eat yesterday?

Fair enough, but out of curiosity can you explain a bit?

Nothing necessarily wrong with having a sweet tooth. And kudos for using a simile I’ve never heard before. That one was… random.

I never actually got sore during Sl. week after week its getting more sore and sessions are getting longer because the rest needed is longer.

Sadly, I don’t follow a specific diet. but it’s somewhat like this:
Breakfast - 4 eggs, 2 slices whole grain, 2 small banana with little milk.
Mid afternoon - some mixed nuts or fruits.
Lunch - a plate of rice(white or brown) with 200 gms chicken or 2 pieces of fish or some quantity of pork, maybe lentils(many kinds).
Pre workout - cup coffee with dates.
Post - banana, milk, water, dates.
Dinner - pretty much like lunch but a little less on the carbs.
And cheat meals somewhere in between these meals( biscuits, chocolate, basically something sweet)

This might sound stupid but I want to see how my body is without the chemicals in supps as in eating whole food for health’s sake. plus I can’t afford them. Don’t earn money as such.

Haha. tried to get off sugar as much as I could. heavy withdrawal effects on the mind :stuck_out_tongue:

Btw a 6 pound increase in weight, little fat but good gains. 3 and a half months since i started working out again.
